Was your DC one of the first summer borns to defer Reception back in 2015?

Just wondering how it had gone?

Did your DC have an extra year in Nursery/home, miss out Reception and then join their actual cohort in Year One?

Did they join Reception with the next cohort?

Have they skipped a year somewhere in Primary to ‘catch them up’ before secondary transfer?

Has anyone had problems with secondary schools being reluctant to take an ‘out of cohort’ child? (Currently they can’t use out of cohort results for league tables etc)

Have you had any problems with out of school sports age groups - ie. a Child in Year 3 having to compete/train with Year 4 children in the U9s teams?

I am wondering if there are any other unforeseen consequences that you’ve had to deal with?

We have a particularly large number of applicants for deferral this year.

No i didnt defer 2016 summer birn start. And afaik there are 0 defferred in dc year.
But we did defer dc2 in yr r now.
No issues so far. Most other parents dont realise. Dc is doing well on writing and maths. Not so well on reading but they are very literal.
I expect they would have done well on the cancelled sports day but because they are tall anyway.
Friendships are a struggle but thats covid plus small village.
We need to be allowing deferral anyway but with covid even yr r kid has missed jan - mar and if that had been for an aug born potentially matlr-jul yr r plus jan to mar yr 1!
Maths for eg is pretty hard by yr 3 and doing all that up to 12m younger much is inappropriate. The detail for eg in fractions much of which im sure we covered in secondary.
Are you on flexible admissions for summer borns on fb?

It's very uncommon for a child to be deferred and start in reception (out if year) more usual for them to start Y1 alongside their peers.
If I were a parent considering this I'd want written reassurances from the LA that my child could continue out of year until they leave school and not have to miss Y6 to start in Y7 or skip Y7 and move straight to Y8. Personally I've only seen this happen when the child has significant SEND.

The legislation currently does not make the decision by one school to allow a delayed start binding on the next school.

Unless the Government gets its act together soonish, the first wave of children who started ‘a year late’ will need to apply for secondary school when their child is in Year 5 (correct calendar age for secondary transfer application) and at the same time apply to the school for a delayed start. I really don’t think this has been well communicated to parents.

At our school we have 3DC in current Y1 who ‘should’ be in Y2. None higher up the school than that. Looking at those 3, it was clearly the right decision for them, they are barely working at Y1 level due to SEN and learning loss, let alone Y2 level. They will not be asked to miss a year while they are with us. They all started YR a year late.

My friend's child might be one of this cohort... born in 2011, currently in Y3 but could be in Y4. Spent an extra year in nursery. No issues with being asked to skip a year within the school or with playing sports.

I'm awaiting with interest their transition to secondary school as I have a deferred summerborn currently in Reception who will go to the same secondary school. I assume our secondary will just be accepting the children into their adopted year without a battle as our council has a policy of parental choice, so there must be quite a few deferred summerborns around...

Deferrals are very common in Scotland, if you are born in the two months before the cut off you can apply and your deferral will be automatically approved, if more than two months your application will have to be reviewed. Deferrals are generally encouraged.

In some schools up to 12% of any year group will be deferrals, they tend to be in middle class areas.

There is much much less stress and angst about the whole thing.

I have late July born twins and will be deferring them in two years. Just turned five is too young to be hitting yr1.

I deferred my son who started school in 2015 and is now in year 5. He was born prematurely and was just not ready.

No issues and no regrets. We have encountered no problems with secondary school applications, I will just have to do a paper form as the online form will automatically reject him due to his DOB. We are considering private secondary schooling and none of the private schools we have contacted have a problem with it either.

The only slight issue has been the village football team. He had been playing with kids in the year above him at school which he found a big awkward. But we applied to FA for an out of year exemption and he’s now with his peers (he’s a little small for his age so they had no issues with him playing down a year).
