Standard of work reception and meeting targets

So our school gave us a document showing the standard they expect by the end of reception. The class teacher said the children's school reports will tell us if they meeting this or not. As this is my first born, what do I do if DS doesn't meet the standard. Is it my fault or the schools? And am I to summer school him to catch up? I'm stressed as the standard seems hard and I don't think he's meeting the writing or the counting requirements. He's just turned 5 this week.

It's no one's fault, they all progress at different paces and especially after the year they've had! His teachers will have strategies to differentiate work so all kids progress. They may have suggestions on activities to do with him at home but honestly I think kids need a lovely summer enjoying experiences more than ever.

It's no one's fault. And if that happens, you can do some work during summer, like reading, do practical math with everyday life, encourage diary or some form of writing etc, in a fun way. You can ask the teacher for advice how to help him during the summer.
But from my experience of watching children in my dc's class, most of children who struggled a bit at the start of school would definitely catch up.
So, I wouldn't worry to much.

It is neither the fault of the school or you it is just where your child is currently working. The government set a standard and every year some children will meet it and others won't. Given most children were remote learning for part of the year I would expect more children than usual not to be at age expected standard. Please do not worry or spend the summer trying to catch up. It just lets the year one teachers know where to pick up the learning. Playing games, regular reading/ stories and perhaps the odd sentence written about a day out will be great to keep them ticking over ready for year one. He is only just 5 being 'behind' now does not mean he will be there forever please try not to worry.

Reception and Year 1 are notorious for children not meeting the end-of-year targets. My daughter definitely didn't in either literacy or numeracy- and is a July birthday.

She's ahead in everything now in Year 3.

Don't worry- particularly with this disjointed year. I should imagine Reception and Year 1 were absolutely fiendish to teach remotely too (maybe impossible).

I’m not a teacher but I suspect there are lots of summer born boys who don’t meet the writing goal and especially this year with home learning.
