What does DD's teacher mean when she says her reading level is 3B?

She said it was good, so I'm not worried, but I'd like to know what the levels mean. DD is 8.

Average child is expected to reach level 4 by year 6. 3C, 3B, 3A... then 4C, 4B, 4A etc. So she's doing great!

I assume that you daughter is in Year 4 at the moment? 3B is the level that a child in year 4 is expected to reach by the END of the academic year - so she is doing very well.
Typically this means that she is able to read the text fluently but may get stuck on unknown words or words that don;t sound like they are spelt. SHe is able to answer basic questions about any text - i.e. the answers are easily 'findable' in the text usually starting with 'what' and 'who' e.g. WHat colour was the girl's coat? - ans The girls coat was red.She will also be beginning to infer simple information by using any clues that may be in the text e.g. Why do you think Red Riding Hood didn't want to go with the wolf? - ans: because she was scared of his big teeth.
When reading with your daughter in order to move her on you need to focus on these sorts of questions - ones that start with 'How do you know....why do you thnk.... and always get her to point to where the information was in the text that helped her find an answer. E.g. Which words/sentences in the text gave us a clue to the answer, WHat made you think that Red Riding Hood was brave - because it says in the text that 'she took a deep breath and retrieved a slingshot from her basket ready to attack the vicious wolf.'
Also read different kinds of texts with her not just stories - try information books, leaflets, recipes, poems interviews, etc focussing on what each type of text is for - what is its purpose and who will be te audience.
Ask the school for a blank copy of old optional SATs papers from Year 3 and 4 if they have any.
Hope this helps
