Suncream at Primary?

Hi, just wondering if anyone is sending their DC into school with suncream while it's hot? I don't know of any policy at school about whether it's ok or not. I sent a little roll on one with DC this morning an they said the teacher asked if anyone had cream to put on, but they were the only one.

I don't want to be that parent but also want my child protected from the sun, especially on PE days when they spend even more time outside.

I apply the 10 hour suncream before they go in and they have their hats I wouldnt feel confident about my kids fully applying suncream themselves, I don't think they would do it properly.
They have never burnt with the 10 hour suncream.

Please be that parent! Melanoma foundations are laid down in childhood, and of the 7 people that die in the Uk each day from it, 5 are preventable. See if your child's school can be part of the SKCin program.

Primary school TA here. At our school children are allowed to bring their own and they have to apply it. Staff are very clearly told we are NOT to apply it. A letter has gone home requiring children to bring sunhats and water bottles as well. No hat means they will not be allowed outside when the weather is hot.

At our school, dc are asked to bring it in and re-apply themselves. I always use all day cream before school, then dc apply a roll on cream before lunch.

Dds school let's us send it in so I just shove it in the bag. They just remind us to tell the kids to not share.

Neither if my dds can use the all day ones as they react to it.

FelicityPike · 09/06/2021 08:21

I apply her all day stuff before she goes and make sure she’s wearing her hat.

Blueskythinking123 · 09/06/2021 09:31

My DD is a fair skin red head. The all day stuff with a hat was always ok.

Marmite27 · 09/06/2021 09:32

We use the once a day stuff. Got some calypso factor 20 for £4.99 in B&M.

Temperature is irrelevant - basic science. Solstice June 21st which is peak uv. Suncream needed. Once a day better than nothing. Teach kid to put it on.

Sirzy · 09/06/2021 09:34

I just put an 8 hour one on before school

Scrambledcustard · 09/06/2021 09:37

It was sports day at our school yesterday and every one got an email the day before insisting that all children had 8 hour sun cream applied before the came to school.

Not seen anything else about it being applied every day - DD3 had to when she was in nursery and we was accosted every morning to make sure at drop off!

justanotherneighinparadise · 09/06/2021 09:38

I use a spray factor 50 one on them before we go
In the morning. I suspect it’s not as good as a thick cream version but teamed with a baseball cap im happy. They’ve never been burned so I must be doing something right.

The once a day cream doesn’t work for everyone. My DH burns very easily (pale skin but dark hair) the once a day doesn’t work for him unless he tops it up every few hours.[/quote]
I would try a different brand. I am very fair and have skin allergies to many sunscreens but piz burn allergy works for me.

Sh05 · 09/06/2021 09:48

I use factor 50+ in the morning although we are reminded by school that if they can apply it themselves then they should bring s bottle in to top up before lunch time

glitterelf · 09/06/2021 09:53

I apply before school and DD then reapplies through the day as necessary with a roll on one. DD burns super easily and reacts to some of the other brands. She takes my sun hat in which is super wide brimmed as she's got such fair hair.
I always opt for a decent cream over spray so it's easy to see if you've missed any bits.
DH was diagnosed with skin cancer at the beginning of the first lockdown and he's always been super careful about sun care actively seeks shade always wears suncream but was badly burnt as a child so I'd much rather be that parent than my child suffering later on.

DeadButDelicious · 09/06/2021 10:01

DD is in nursery for 3 hours each morning, I put sun screen on her in the morning but I don't send a bottle in with her as she's home by 11:45 so I top her up then. When she starts reception in September I'll be getting the all day sun screen and a roll on she can put on herself. Her Dad and I are both really fair and burn very easily so making sure she's protected is important. I'd hate her to get burnt and if she's anything like us it won't take long for it to happen. I can burn after a very short exposure to the sun and her dad is the same.
