May I please recommend JOAN AITKEN to years 4,5 and 6

An earlier thread reminded me. As did a fab sequence of lessons I recentlydid on traditional tales with a group of year5 children.

Joan Aitken wrote several books of short stories - the ones I remember mostly are Kingdom under the Sea (REAL fairy tales) andA Necklace of Raindrops (REALfantasy).

My Year 5 class were in awe of 'Baba Yaga's daughter' and my wonderful edition with Jan Pionowkski (sp?) illustrations.

Oh she is fab.
The older editions do 'make'the difference though!

I loved a Necklace of Raindrops when I was small, and I was given a Jan Pienkowski illustration copy a couple of birthdays ago, it is most treasured.

I loved the Arabel and the raven stories when I was little, especially when Bernard Cribbins read them on Jackanory

Dd loves Mortimer. The Quentin Blake illustrations are just fantastic.

Absolutely agree with you, popsycal. Aitken rocks!

Oh, and if you love Jan P, she's just done a new book: The Thousand Nights and One Night (retold by David Walser).

I saw that bookinthe bookshop at the weekend I bought the pienkowski fairy tales onefor a friend'sdaughter 2 years ago and she still reads it under hercovers afterlightsout! I think I may get her it for christmas

on a slightly different note - I have a tiny Easter story book with extracts from the bible and it has illustrations by Jan Pienkowski which are just sublime.I can't remember where or when i got it but it's so beautiful and unusual. Thanks for that link popsycal - looks like a great book and I think I will get that one for the dds ( and me!).

Just to add - one of my pupils said to me thatthe Baba Yaga story gave them bad dreams. I was secretlypleasedas that, IMHO,is whatit is meant to do!!!

We had the baba yaga music playing too

yes, I was just thinking we need Marina's scholarly input!!

I may be wrong,however, I am pretty sure that Marina is a Pienkowski/Aitken fan
