Top 20% in country

Our head has told us that the results of recent year 6 assessments would put the school in the top 20% in the country for reading and maths.

I’m aware they haven’t done SATS this year, so can anyone tell me how they would know this & how they can be compared to other schools?

Have other national assessments been done?

He doesn't know that

He probably does however know that this year they have an unusually strong cohort (years vary, and once in a while you get one with a high proportion of diligent pupils) and wants parents to know that.

Either that or he's admitting the school is generally not doing well, and home schooling has produced better results ....

The will have taken a previous year's paper and looked at the percentage results for that in comparison with the national for the same year.

He’ll probably have had a letter from DfE to say that. Our head got one for handwriting.

Although there have been no official national tests, schools have still had to access their Y6 cohorts both for their own knowledge and to pass accurate data to the secondary schools.

Nationally, many schools have submitted this data to the Fischer Family Trust and it has been used by the organisation to create an overall picture of attainment.

This headteacher may have generated his FFT 2020 progress report (2021 is not available yet). That report may have said that the school is in the top 20% of school-submitted data nationally.

Is it as independent as the KS2 assessments would have been? No.
Is it a relatively accurate picture? Yes.
