I am going to clarify this with her teacher but should I be concerned she is still on pink books (reading, writing, inc)

We did dicuss her being moved back a little for this half term as her condidenc is quite low- the theory was she'd have 6 weeks or so doing work she was more easily able to complete. I was under the impression this was just classroom work though (she has moved seats to facilitate this change etc)

She is a bright, eloquent, happy child and har last parents evening , end of March - she is sitting at "meets expectations" for reading, writing and maths.

She manages for pink books easily and I write that in her reading diary every week.

Just wondering if I'm missing anything?

Her confidence is low.

And want to add we read with her lots at home too.

Do you mean pink level READ, WRITE INC (not reading, writing inc)

If so then pink level isn’t anywhere near the lowest band. It’s the equivalent of book band green which is spot on for year 1

6yo, year 1 child still in very lowest reading level.

Can you email the teacher to discuss - do they think she might be ready to move up/are they concerned?

Just as a side thought, has she ever had her eyes tested? Ds3 gained 2 years & 9 months of reading age in about six months in yr2 once he had glasses and eye drops sorted (big prescription for a child, plus some physical problems with his eyes)

If she’s meeting expectations, then it doesn’t seem like there’s anything for you to worry about.
Keep reading with her. Can you go to your local library and get her books that are a little bit more challenging if the pink books are easy?
She sounds like she’s doing fine. 6 is still so little.

At this stage in year one I wouldn’t say that pink level reading would put her at ‘meets expectations’ I’m afraid. So I would definitely question that as one or the other isn’t correct.
It would concern me a bit that she doesn’t seem to have made any progress over the year. How is her phonics knowledge? Can she segment and blend well? Has she done the yr1 phonics screening and passed? Does she recognise an increasing number of the tricky exception words.
The expectations for her year group are easily found with a quick google. Do you think she’s meeting them?

Ah, if @Insertfunnyname is correct then that makes a lot more sense!
I’m not familiar with them scheme.
Oxford reading tree book bands have pink at the lowest level!

Marmite27 · 27/05/2021 06:55

I was going to say the same as a PP, if it’s Read Write Inc, then pink is level 3!

Confusingly they go Red, Green, Purple, Pink with red being level zero. They’re called ‘ditty’ books, and are different again to the reading scheme level zero books (lilac) which are the wordless books.

I wouldn’t worry if it is RWI.

Look on the toe by toe website. I used this for my son but he was in year 4 and was behind a little with sounds etc. I purchased this as a friend recommended it. It goes back to basics with sounds and how to split words up so might not be suitable for year 1? We did half an hour a day for a term didn’t complete the book which I probably should have done, and his reading came on so much I can’t remember what levels he was on now I know he jumped up 2 maybe 3 reading levels just by knowing sounds and the reading rules which his school wasn’t teaching him or if they were he just didn’t get the teaching style - he’s yr 7 so it was a few years ago. But it definitely helped him.

If she's at meet's expectations then its almost certainly the equivalent of book band green which is fine for this stage in Year 1. Progress can come it fits and starts. If she needs more confidence then building up slowly given she isn't behind seems sensible. Reading more complex books to her to expand her vocabulary is great.

noscoobydoodle · 27/05/2021 11:07

If it's read, write, Inc, then pink books seem to be in line with expectations. My DD5 also lacked a bit of confidence so was not moved up a band when she was technically able to so she could build her confidence. It's done her the world of good - even though at home she reads stuff that is much more complex, for some reason she lacked confidence with the school books. However I have found they don't get assessed too often at our school (read with a TA or student who doesn't move bands) so if you really feel she needs to move on you might need to ask.

Crunchymum · 27/05/2021 17:49

Oh god I'm do embarrassed.

Not only was I looking at completely the wrong part of the chart, but I got the name of the system out school use wrong too.

@Insertfunnyname thanks!!
