We have been asked to take a photo of a local landmark or significant area that depicts loneliness, despair or hope.

What does this even mean? I can imagine a person showing these emotions, but how does a landscape or building show emotion?? Any ideas? DS is as uninspired as me. But I'm hoping if we can find something reasonable this weekend and it can be explained to him, it will stand him in good stead next week, when I think the whole week is about this topic and his photo.....
He's 9 btw.

An derelict building/church with some flowers growing round it?

DancesWithDaffodils · 21/05/2021 20:07

Thank you.
I guess that's the problem - everything round here is new. The "old" church is about 25 years old. And the new one is, well, more recent.

I did wonder if we could find a solitary tree somewhere -but does that meet the landmark/significant area criteria?

Is there a building that used to be a workhouse?
A homeless shelter?
A war memorial?

Whereabouts in the uk are you and you drive?

FlattestWhite · 21/05/2021 20:10

Hope might be an easier one to do. A church/stained glass window, somewhere that people celebrate big events that make them hopeful for the future? A meadow with flower buds suggesting spring? A primary school or nursery with the next generation? A landmark doesn't have to be pretty or famous outside the town, just somewhere that is know or recognisable

CrabbyCat · 21/05/2021 20:13

That sounds tough for 9!

Picture from inside of an empty church other than one person (you) sitting all by themselves? If you go for significant area instead are there any abandoned railway tracks or canals near you?

CrabbyCat · 21/05/2021 20:14

Or if you go with landmarks what about closed down shops?

Stichintime · 21/05/2021 20:16

I like the closed down shops idea. This certainly represents despair!

We live in the middle of post 1980 suburbia.
I can drag DS into town for a shut down M&S and Debenhams, will see what he thinks to that idea, thank you.
It's a long way out of my comfort zone, hence not being able to make it easier for him with suggestions.
Good job he didn't see the eye roll from me when I read the message!

I think this is an assignment where you are being encouraged to use your eyes and your imagination. Choosing a subject then going out and finding it is starting from the wrong end I think. Far more meaningful to take a walk around and look for things that resonate with your dc in some way. It might be something small, like a sign, something broken, or something larger, like a whole building, but I think if your dc can go out and find something that they find they will get more out of the project. I imagine that they will be asked to explain their choice, or write about it later, so it will be easier to do that if it is their choice.

A gravestone?

GingerScallop · 27/05/2021 20:31

A bench. An empty one or with someone sitting alone looking out.

A lone tree. The fewer the leaves, the better.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 27/05/2021 20:41

A neglected gravestone.
Or anything in the rain.
A fallen tree, broken swing, empty bird nest, neglected/abandoned kids park.

Also something broken/forgotten. Maybe a toy in the park,or a little teddy on the side of the road, an abandoned bike(you can stage this). Or something like what could be a treasured possession in a bin/fly tipped. An empty pet bed/cage.

Hope a sunrise,a rainbow, trees in bloom, flower buds, a new shop opening or flyers welcoming people back.

Not sure if any of you lovely lot who made suggestions will see this, but DS's picture of a lamb in a field has won the KS2 prize for art week, and is going to be displayed in the art gallery who assisted with the schools art week. Thank you all.

Well done!

CrabbyCat · 18/06/2021 18:35

Well done!

KingscoteStaff · 19/06/2021 15:51

Was the lamb lonely, hopeful or despairing??
