How often does your little boy hurt himself at school?

Mine has just been sent home with his third head injury slip this term.

He is a normal boisterous four year old, but it is in the same place on his forehead, a really big bump, right in the centre. He's never banged this bit before.

The first time was at the start of term when someone pushed him off a scooter. Second time was a week ago when someone bashed his head on some railings. And yesterday he said it was simply him falling over his own feet.

I cannot help but see this as worrying! Why is it always his little head? Is it normal for 4 year old boys to have repeated injuries like this?

Or should I be concerned about it, maybe he is unusually clumsy or something?
I know he gets very tired but I never see the other kids getting these injuries.

mine has had about 3, but last year at pre-school it seemed to be daily. he is 5.2y

min is 6 and has had three notably injuries this term. he had an awful mark (like zorro) right across his face, caused by a skipping rope 'accident' , massive bruise on his bum caused by a kick and yesterday a bruise on his ear (of all places). i also get a bit about them all.

mine is 6 not min!

thanks, maybe it's just normal then! I guess the combination of a hundred tired receptioners is bound to lead to accidents!

My little brother used to always fall and hit his head. He is my half brother (I have 3 brothers all together) and the other two brothers never had this problem. My Dad and Stepmom used to really worry about it. I guess he was just a bit clumsier/accident prone. He is now a strapping 17 yr old rugby player and is fine.

In Reception, dd came home with a bumped-head slip several times every week - as did most of the other children. She was forever falling off things, banging into things, being tripped, falling over her own feet. Her favourite one was bumping into a tree ... you'd have thought the tree was big enough to see! As she's got older she's had less accidents.

I promise you that the other kids do get these injuries; our school slaps stickers onto children who have bumped their heads so that the teachers can keep an eye on them, and there are scores of them with these stickers every day. I work in the school at lunchtime, and the queue for first-aid is always at least six children long - most of these will have bumped their heads.

Ds was 5 yo in October and has lots of slips home. He told me this week that the medical person said they were "fed up of seeing him". Probably meant in a nice way

often! Last serious injury was a broken arm about 6 weeks ago but he seems to bump or bang most days. Tis usually his own fault as he and his friends are like maniacs in the playground.

Oh my, nobody told me this at the 20 week scan!!!! I could have had him adopted at birth and saved a lot of worry

be thankful that the school are telling you. Ds injured his hand with a pencil at school the other day. the school didn't tell me-he was in hospital with a severe infection 24 hours later.

IME it is totally normal. My ds had an accident record all through nursery that read like war and peace. He's no better at school!

Columbia · 17/11/2007 11:57

Ooer that is awful. I hope he is alright now?

Yes it is good they keep us informed. I find it so hard not knowing what happens for half his life, while he is at school.

ds2 constantly had bumps, bruises and grazes over him in reception.

I remember telling his teacher that I was glad it was happening at school because they'd probably think we'd been beating him otherwise

My DS is 5 and falls over everyday!! TBH we are more surprised if he comes home and tells us he hasnt fell over

Toothyboy · 17/11/2007 17:29

Ds1 is 4.5 and started reception in Sept. So far I've been 'phoned about 4 times to tell me he's bumped his head - 1 occasion required a trip to A&E to have it glued together! He's also brought home 2 bumped head slips. So glad to hear this is normal - I was starting to worry as well.
