Reading abilities in reception

My summer born twins are in reception and our school is using the Read Write inc method to teach phonics, reading etc. They are currently reading book 6 in the green banding group. I'd like to have an idea what the expectation is of the children by end of reception and whether they are meeting expectations at the moment. I'm aware that some of the older children in their class are ahead of them but no idea where the average is sitting. Thanks

The bands are not linked to any measurable skill that can be compared between schools. Ask the teacher how they are doing. Only they can give you an accurate idea of where they are.

My DS’s school uses RWI but the reading books they send home are Oxford reading tree levels. If you google it you can find correlation charts. Looks like RWI green is equivalent to ORT yellow which is what my DS is currently on. According to the ORT they should ideally be on yellow or light blue by the end of reception.

Cant really compare especially with covid.
Our class is still only on digraphs sh/ch in books.

Other dc finished yr r on orange but able to read lime etc easily.

We use RWI in our school and Green by the end of reception is great. It means that they know all of the single letter sounds of the alphabet and some diagraphs (qu, ch, th, sh, nk, ng,). They are probably learning Set 2 sounds which are ay, ee, igh, ow, oo and a few more. I work in a very deprived area and we have some children nearly at the end of year 1 who are not this far along :(
