Alternative Primary Schooling

BasiaiMariusz · 20/04/2021 07:28

We are looking for an alternative primary schooling for our five-year daughter. The best would be a Finnish model or something similar. Our daughter is too independent and she needs learning where she would not be coerce to do anything. We live in Kingston upon Thames. We will be very grateful for any suggestions and answers. All the best to everyone.

What do you mean too independent?

Crowsandshivers · 20/04/2021 07:31

What do you mean by coerced? By other pupils of teachers?

Whinge · 20/04/2021 07:33

Why do you think a regular school won't be suitable? Reception is very child led. Confused

CakesOfVersailles · 20/04/2021 08:49

I'm not sure what you mean by independent/co-erced. All children at school will be expected to do things like take turns, sit and listen, etc

If you mean choose areas of the curriculum for herself - something like the Montessori method? Unfortunately the only Montessori primary school I know of is quite far from Kingston - River House Montessori.

Somewhere else that might appeal is the London Acorn School - again too much of a commute perhaps?

Closer to home maybe Liberty Woodland School?

I suggest you investigate all the local schools, a mainstream primary / traditional prep might be more suitable than you think.

NerrSnerr · 20/04/2021 18:12

Can you explain what you mean by too independent?

firedog · 20/04/2021 19:28

I think you need to visit some schools ASAP and see what they are like. Reception is usually child led and often free flow mainly

spanieleyes · 20/04/2021 20:00

Too independent is usually used in the same sentence as " spirited" Confused

mdh2020 · 20/04/2021 20:00

I think you need to be honest about your daughter and maybe have her assessed. I think she will be fine in an ordinary school and it might do her good.

Thank everyone for help. We have chosen the Steiner Primary School. All the best.

Steiner is a terrible choice, and about as far away from the Finnish model as you can get. Confused
ineedaholidaynow · 21/04/2021 08:25

Would never recommend a Steiner school

User27aw · 21/04/2021 08:27

That was a quick decision.

Ytrigging · 22/04/2021 11:48

It sounds like you’re trying to write “she has terrible behaviour” in a nicer way. Perhaps you should focus on teaching her to behave better or assessing for SEN rather than hunting for a school which will tolerate bad behaviour. You’d be doing her a favour in the long run.

Lazierdays · 22/04/2021 11:54

It’s ofsted inadequate which is almost unheard of, especially for Primary!
Research Steiner properly before committing..

ineedaholidaynow · 22/04/2021 16:48

Our local Steiner school was closed due to massive safeguarding concerns

whatiknow2015 · 22/04/2021 20:02

Have you looked at Liberty Woodland School? It is a forest primary school from the people who founded Little Forest Folk- the amazing outdoor nurseries in SW London

Ericaequites · 23/04/2021 12:21

Steiner schools are very rigid, racist, and tend to ignore bullying. They aren’t a good choice for nearly all children.

Isawthathaggis · 23/04/2021 20:56

I wanted to love Steiner, but the lack of governance is concerning.

The first thing a child needs is a safe environment, are you sure they will provide that OP?

Lockdowndramaqueen · 24/04/2021 07:10

Have you looked at Educare Small School in Kingston or the German School - Ham I think.
