Sutton primaries - data on secondary destination?

Hi everyone

We are looking to move to Sutton/Cheam, with a focus on great primaries.

There is decent data on SAT results (i.e. % meeting expectations, % exceeding), but very few schools have info on the typical proportion of year 6 leavers that manage to get a place at the selective grammars (eg nonsuch, wallington, tiffins etc). The only one that seems to have a high proportion is Seaton House School which is a private prep school.

Does anyone have any data, information or personal awareness of which primary (both state and private) do particularly well in getting into the selective grammars afterwards?

Thanks...

I don't think the information would be published anywhere. The state primaries are not involved in prepping for the 11+.

Agreed with Seeline. The schools play no part in preparing the children for the 11+ so it’s a statistic of no relevance to them.

This isn't data that any primary state school would publish. Its simply not sonething that state schools work towards.

Prep schools, on the other hand, should give you very thorough break downs as prepping for entrance exams is their raison d'etre.

The majority of children that get in are very bright and are well prepared by private tutors, parents or prep schools so that data would not really help you.

You can get a sense of how a school is doing by looking at the Ofsted report in detail. There may be comments like 'not stretching the top learners'. You can also find out a school's progress score (can't remember the specific name) if how they compare nationally.

As you say, most of the schools in that area are good. None of the state schools will specifically prepare for the 11+ and realistically you will need to tutor or do prep at home. A whole range of primary schools are likely to send a few pupils each, with some fluctuation each year based on individual pupils.

It is probably worth noting that Cheam Village is largely the leafy middle class area. Parts of Central Sutton and parts of North Cheam are a bit more mixed. This may impact leavers destinations, based on parents' desire and ability to tutor. This is not a reflection on the quality of the school. (On central Sutton in particular there are some very well regarded schools based on their Ofsted.) Some schools get a reputation amongst parents for being the more desirable schools but it is often a bit of a self selecting cycle. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the primaries round there. You would be better off considering secondary catchments in case your child doesn't get in to grammar. Glenthorne for example is a very popular school.
