My dd2 has come home from school today (Reception class) with her interim report.

The report details which colour she is on regarding the 'stepping stones' - could someone please explain to me ...

a. what are the 'stepping stones'
b. what do these colours represent

The report is to inform me about my childs progress so far, or rather it would inform me if i could make head or tail of it, lol.

Anyone?

TIA

The foundation stage is currently changing at the moment so some of this will be changing in the next couple of months anyway.

  1. The stepping stones are the curriculum for 3-5 year olds both in pre-schools,day nurseries and schools - and the idea is that they are steping stones to development.

There are 6 areas of learning and the stepping stone will start with something easy that 3 year olds can do but will progress colour wise until the end of the reception class.

I would also ask the teacher for a copy of whatever it is the report refers to.

Thanks both of you x

I know that the EYFS is taking the place of the FS and i'm also familiar with the 6 areas of the curriculum. It was the 'stepping stones' that confused me, lol although i now realise that these are the steps leading to the early learning goals.

I'm not sure whether that helps or not Juule as the report identifies that the child is either working on the yellow and blue stepping stones, the green stepping stones or is ready to work on the early learning goals?? Confused

I have parents evening next Tuesday so will ask the teacher then, i was just curious ...and a little baffled at to what the colours represented.

Thanks again.

Here's something else - search 'stepping stones'
Curriculum guide for foundation stage
"They are not age-related, although it is likely that three-year old children will be better described by earlier stepping-stones, shown in the yellow band, progressing through those in the blue band, with later stepping-stones in the green band normally describing older children in the foundation stage."
Seems the green band is 'normally' for 5yo.

EYFS doesn't actually come in until next September so is a bit of a way off yet. I wouldn't worry too much about the colours tbh, I have children in the nursery who at 3 are reaching some of the green stepping stones and some of the early learning goals and some 4 year olds who are still on the yellow.

I understood that the first stage is yellow, then blue then green, then grey when they have met the ELG.

My dds were on green when they left nursery, with their peers mostly green, some areas of blue.

dd mostly achieved the ELG's by the end of Yr R. Areas where she didn't were those that were hard to prove or demonstrate, and the teacher said she had to observe the goal, it was not enough to know she could do it .
