Introducing cursive midway through Reception?

Reception DS had come home (with example sheet) saying he has now been asked to write his name joined up 'as he writes it so beautifully'.
Just curious if it's usual for schools to move them to joined up once they've reached a certain level? This school starts everyone off on printing, no additional flicks or anything.
DS is good at writing for reception, can write paragraphs and spell well, but his sizing isn't consistent yet, so I thought cursive was still quite some way off.

My daughter was very good at writing in reception so we taught her joined up writing at home in the first lockdown. It helped all her letters be the same size and increased the neatness and speed. The rest of the class were introduced to it when they became ready in year 1.

DC1 started at a school that did cursive from the off, pretty much and whilst their writing in early years e.g. Yr 1 looked like a hot mess to me, they explained it’s just much less confusing than trying to ‘undo’ printing habits later on & cursive is quicker all round to use. We switched schools in Yr 2 and new school was a bit surprised by the cursive handwriting as they were only just starting it. Has fine handwriting now - not the loveliest but properly joined and never been commented on negatively.

DC2 started at the school that doesn’t teach it till later and their handwriting (printing) looked lovely in comparison to DC1 at same age but have really struggled with cursive - pen licence not granted (I awarded it in lockdown! Grin), letters uneven, not consistently joined etc.

Maybe DC2 would have struggled anyway, I don’t know, but I do wonder if School 1 was right (it was a great school and more progressive than School 2 I’d say - School 2 is excellent but in different ways).

Thanks - I guess we'll see how quickly they move him along, presumably with some hints on how to support at home. I was just surprised because he's only just learned to write. (I'm certain it would be a lot less legible right now if the school taught cursive right from the start!)

We have used cursive writing in Reception class for over 20 years as have all our local schools. This follows on from nursery.

Don't get me started on the small letter k... Our reception aren't doing cursive, it's y2 I think, but their ks are in prep for it and are ridiculous.

Our school teach cursive from the start, all the worksheets and resources they use are also in cursive.
DD and DS1 are now in high school and they couldn’t care less about handwriting so long as it’s legible and neat.
