What is the WORST thing a parent can SAY or DO at PARENTS EVENING

Wondering how truthful to be. DS seems very unhappy at school at the mo. He asked to be home educated the other day He is in yr 3.

I can't put my finger on it but I am geting a vibe from his teacher that they don't rate him. His previous teacher who he had for two years thought a lot of him and fcused on his strengths rather than his weaknesses. I have a feeling it will be the other way around at parents eve tomorrow.

A large part of the problem is that he is bored -' they go over everything 5 times and I get it after 2 times' he said yesterday. He struggles a lot with writing and I think there is a serious problem there but excels at other stuff e.g maths. He is worried about tomorrow and has developed a worrying tick around his eyes.

To answer the title - tell me I am not stretching the child and he should be on the g and t register when I am about to to suggest that the child is weak in the class....and then blame me for clearly not pushing then enough.

But drosophila if your ds were in my class I wold encourge writing for literacy, but then find other ways to record his answers in things like science, humanities - so it doesn't become about his wriitng.

It is difficult but don't go in thinking she is doing a bad job - tell the teacher the facts and ask what she is doing about it and give her/him chnace to go away think about what you have said and come back to you.

It's not a battle is it? And the teacher did give an answer - she is going to speak to SENCO. There are handwriting practice booklets and computer software which might help. It's okay to struggle with something and work at it and I think it's good to tell children that. No-one can get everything right all the time.

I think we are on the right track now. Thanks to all for suport and advice.

I think my worry is/was that it would all be about writing science etc and I am not sure this will be altered in any way.

Have just done a quick search and found these threads about write from the start. My ds1 aged 5.3 uses it at home and it has helped a lot, he doesn't write at all normally or draw but he does do this. He has a lot of problems in school as he is expected to read and write in year 1 and he doesn't / can't. Its not something that bothers us as he is very very young, but the school is very pushy and he is very aware of being basically at the bottom of the class. Thats the reason we got this for him to do at home without any pressure from school. Its so far not writing letters but drawing scales on a dragon, petal for flowers etc. There is also a programme for older children on amazon

drosophila - if your child was in my class and feeling like he is I would be mortifed and I would feel like I had failed him... it might however put me on the defensive a little but that would be just guilt...

but seriously even with english the handwiritng gets a seperate mark in the SATS. I think the teacher should be looking at getting him to record stuff in other ways - even in english he could use a tape recorder or have a scribe...this would boost his self-esteem.
