Moving to Greenwich worrying about reception

Hello, we are moving to New capital development area near Cutty Sark in Greenwich. Is it a nice place for a 4 year old? How about the primary school near this place? Thank you very much for any ideas

Are you looking at state or private? I know a lot of kids from the area go to St Alfege and James Wolfe - but wondering if you are closer to the other end of New Capital? If so, Invicta may be your catchment school. In terms of private, kids go to Pointers, Blackheath Prep, Heath House, etc.

Thank you@TypsTrycks for your reply. I think I will apply for state school and put my DD on the waiting list of private school at the same time. Do you think that area is safe and good for kids? How about the reputation for the state schools?

Unfortunately I don’t know the state schools well but there have been threads about Invicta and James Wolfe in the past. I think the apartment and surroundings are very safe but can be a little rough just outside. Heath House and Pointers should have places for a 4 year old. You can also look at a 7+ entry as the first few years really make no difference between state and private.

Thanks for the reply! Have a nice weekend

I briefly worked (not as a teacher) in StA & JW, and they seemed like good schools. I think pretty much all the state primary schools round there are good.

Greenwich is a great place for primary school age children. There are lots of clubs and sports to join in with and the primary schools are good, or better in that area. You also have the park and the river, close to Central London etc. There are small pockets of 'dodgier' areas - large groups of kids on bikes has been a thing for a while. They're generally harmless. On the whole Greenwich is a safer area than a lot of other London Boroughs.

@BendingSpoons Thank you for the info. This is a reassurance!.

@Lightsabre Thank you and I start to look forward to the life there! I live in the west now and barely have any idea about Greenwich. But it is really near to my office, so will not spend 1 hour on tube any more

Hello,

Mrs Wilson is the head at St Alfeges so I would find it hard to get a better head. I don't know people at the school but when I found out she was head I nearly moved my children as I think she is fabulous. Just a warm personality, a hard worker and seems so lovely, and is one excellent public speaker.

James Wolfe - well I know people happy with that school, I have a close friend who didn't even have it down on her list of schools and her child is leaving but has loved it.

Meridian may be a bit far but is also seen to be really nurturing and great.

I personally don't know why you would go private in Greenwich unless you had the money. State schools at primary level are excellent. Now Secondary is where it is very challenging.

And to repeat others always lots on for children, Greenwich Music School, Triniity Music and Laban, Black Heath Conservatoire, theatre and dance groups and wonderful Greenwich Park. For young children it is a pleasant place to live.

Thank you@likeisaid, your reply is very informative and reassuring. Hopefully my DD will enjoy the days in Greenwich!
