Grantham primary schools

Hi there I just wondered if anybody knew about “feeder” primary schools to the great secondaries / grammars in Grantham (and surrounds). Looking to relocate - DD in year 1 - and unsure which primaries I should be looking at. Any advice?

Hi! There aren't feeder schools as such though a few primaries do have the reputation for coaching for the 11 plus - such as Cliffedale or Grantham Prep. Generally the village schools tend to be the 'nicer' schools in the Grantham area - look at Allington, Harlaxton, Barkston, Barrowby, Denton, Great Gonerby or Long Bennington.

If you can move to a village rather than the town itself I would definitely recommend doing that. None of these villages are more than a few miles from the town centre.

For state schools, it will be whatever schools have places. For our Yr2 child, that was a choice of one, two miles from where we lived. For our Yr4, it was a different school, also two miles away. Finally got her place in the same school on appeal.
Their school isn't the greatest, but they enjoy it. Pupils pass the 11+ each year.

Personally, I would check you move into the right area for one of the decent Comps. I can't remember which ones are the good ones, but there is one with bad results/reputation (we are now leaving Grantham, so I haven't done much research on the Secondarys).

Just checked... It was the Bluecoat Meres academy which was the one to avoid for Secondary but now has new name and management (as of January). There's no catchment areas or feeder schools, just distance to school.

I’ve been looking at KGGS specifically which I guess has triggered the question around primaries however having a good comprehensive back up makes absolute sense. Will definitely have a look at the village schools also, thank you, and try to work out distances, eek, such a minefield! I’ve just started looking though so any info is helping.

If it helps, I have in my Youth Group children from

  • National Junior School
  • St Anne's
  • St Mary's
  • Huntingtower
And the general consensus is the children with the parents is the children are happy, that all the schools have their negatives and positives. In addition, my neighbours children go to Harlaxton, Ropsley, and Belton Lane... Again children are happy (but parents wish the commute was shorter, we don't live near any schools).

There is also a lot of houses being built, and although there are plans for a new Primary, there isn't for Secondary apparently.

Oh yes, the brand new primary school is called Poplar Farm and is on a new housing estate - supposed to be very good. It opened a couple of years ago.

Don't worry about getting into KG - if you live in Grantham or surrounding villages and pass the 11 plus you are guaranteed a place.

The boys' grammar Kings takes its intake on 11 plus score regardless of where you live so is a lot harder to get in to. High scoring boys have been known to travel from London on the train to go there!

KGGS is different. It takes on catchment and girls from a very large radius outside Grantham get places - as long as they pass!

Hi,
we're planning to send our daughter to a primary that has a good reputation for helping children to pass their 11+. Aiming for Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School.

Sorry, what is your Youth Group?
Thanks
