I need hand holding! Applied to 3 schools for entry and scholarship. Have the results for one (in but no scholarship) and waiting for the other two (one is the one we really want). Should hear this week but an exhausted from checking my emails every 2 minutes! Anyone else in the same position?

Why? Why be so pushy? Bursary I can understand but scholarships are icing on the cake and good for boasting. It’s hardly the most important thing in life.,

Hmm do you think the op is perhaps referring to the financial support?

Do you maybe not know what a scholarship is?
PresentingPercy · 12/02/2021 15:54

Yes. I do. DD had one. They often do not attract much money these days. Bursaries are the main vehicle for reduction of fees. Mainly because bursary money goes to those who actually need it. Perhaps you did not know that? Some scholarships are worth £0. A friend's DS had one at Rugby worth £0. DD's was worth didly squat. it is a prestige thing but often not financial.

TheBossOfMe · 12/02/2021 16:11

PresentingPercy - my DD has a scholarship that offers 25% reduction on fees. So not all are worth diddly squat.

MrPickles73 · 12/02/2021 20:23

presentingpercy why is worrying about something being pushing? You'll be disappointed yo hear it came through today and DC1 got a 25 percent discount. But it's not just about the money it's a pat on the back for DC1 for all their hard work Grin. And also protects them from comparisons with DC2 who already has a sports scholarship.

Because it’s the icing on the cake for a few. At my DDs prep I was never aware of anyone getting this worked up. Personally I agree with bursaries and scholarships should be honorary. The money separated from the honour. You look desperate and over invested. Lots of children work hard and what about their feelings when they don’t get something and you are celebrating?

Many congrat's to your DC1 :-)

Well done OP! That's brilliant - and the financial support is great too. For some even a modest award can just push it over the line to being manageable. Great news :)

MrPickles73 · 13/02/2021 16:52

Thank you. We are delighted!

My DC1 also going for one. Max award even smaller than yours but to my mind worth it. Every little helps. We'll see !

LegoLegs · 14/02/2021 10:34

Oh .... and for the record .... I am the polar opposite of pushy!

MrPickles73 · 14/02/2021 12:45

Yes for us it makes the difference between affordable and a nightmare..

@PresentingPercy are you Zinnia from days old, lover of racehorses?

PresentingPercy · 15/02/2021 13:44

No. I am not but I do love horses!

I actually believe that a great education should be avaailbe to lots of DC and not just the ones who are schooled for scholarships. Bursaries are the way forward and that is why scholarships should be honorary. Bursaries should be deployed on the basis of parental income. Scholarships should be £0 and available to anyone who deserves one, rich or not. Inevitably people get them, if they are worth lots of money, who do not need them. Bursaries are different and meet Charieties Commission rules and ideals more closely. DC can get both and that is perfectly ok. But I still would not be chewing my wrists over any of it.

Andante57 · 15/02/2021 13:47

Congratulations to your dc. What a load off your mind.

MrPickles73 · 15/02/2021 14:26

presentingpercy clearly a 25 per cent discount in your case is neither here nor there for you. That's great news for you but important for us. Our kids got no tutoring it was all home grown effort.

PresentingPercy · 15/02/2021 16:38

For heavens sake! Our scholarships had no £££ discount attached. You don’t seem to follow the logic that, in order to be a charity, schools should offer bursaries that are separate from scholarships. Obviously the two can go together but in many cases scholarship parents absolutely don’t need a big discount on fees. Also if it’s just 25% you must have enough to pay the 75% which is still more than most families could afford. So maybe a dose of realism is needed. Bursaries which are means tested satisfy the charities commission aims. Handing out money to people who can afford the fees anyway should stop. Lumping the two together is wrong too. Well done on affording 75%. You must be proud to be able to afford that.
