How can we get those ‘less able’ students more involved in Zoom/Teams lessons?

I’ve been watching some recorded lessons recently and noticed it’s the same children being actively involved in the classes. They are the ones that put their hands up, the ones that know the answers etc etc.

I’ve no issue with that. I’m sure it also happens in face-to-face lessons, but as the parent of s child that doesn’t get involved because often he’s day dreaming or fiddling, is love to hear any ideas that other teachers might be using to try and entice the less able students out from the shadows and possiy improve their confidence into the bargain.

Currently the students either put their hand up in the lesson or contribute to the written chat. Unfortunately the less able students just copy the kids who have the correct answer. So if you check chat the answers all end up being the same. I have seen the teacher ask the odd child who is keeping quiet a question and then being super nice if the child doesn’t know, so I’m sure they’re recognising the need not to humiliate.

I just wonder what else they might try? I have asked my son to sit with a pad and pen or whiteboard and marker and try and write things down as they go through the calculations. Even if he chooses not to put his hand up, at least he might have the satisfaction of knowing he too worked it out.

He seems to think all lessons are just sitting passively listening. Whereas I can see that the maths at least is very interactive.
