What year do you start teaching coding?

My DS is in year 2 and is quite good at logic and maths. He has shown interest in learning to code but I do not think he knows what it really means and entails.
Has anyone taken coding classes or courses for this age kids?
What courses or tools have you used?

My dd is in her first year at University and just started doing a bit.

LittleRa · 24/01/2021 23:44

I teach Year 2, and also have a 6yo DD.
Have a look at Scratch- a free coding app for children.
Scratch is for 8-11 year olds and Scratch Junior is 5-7 year olds. I use Scratch Junior with my class and my DD.

EYFS with Bee-bots or similar

Absolutely Scratch and Scratch Jr. I've used Scratch Jr with Primary 1s

Lego boost combines code like blocks (like scratch etc) in order to control moving robots/contraptions that you build out of lego if you think that would appeal. My son loved it and he was about that age and has used it to then go on and build/use the code blocks to do other stuff.

My ds had classes in y1 age 5

From Year one

Another vote for Scratch Junior. My DD(6) loves it. At school they had a Beebot in reception.

Lots of free lessons here. My Year 2s last year liked Code Combat. However it does require fairly fluent reading and a little adult help at times. Some of the other games he could play easier on his own.

Scratch and Scratch Jr are great. You can do classes via Mama Codes even during lockdown (they are on zoom).

You can also use Cubetto (a little programmable robot), which my daughter's school uses in the early years before Scratch.

SouthLondonMommy · 25/01/2021 11:03

Both Scratch Jr and Cubetto are intended for kids 3 and up (an really as young as two if your kid is particularly math / logic inclined) so Year 2 definitely isn't too early.

I love Osbots - really great introduction to Coding and fun too!

Norestformrz · 25/01/2021 12:03

We use Conquer Computing and Scratch jr as well as Beebots and and Botley with the very youngest children.
I'd be surprised if your child hasn't been doing coding

My dc's school started in reception, not really coding but he was introduced to use Word/Power Point and later Excel. School used Scratch and Kodu throughout KS1and KS2.
Personally he started learning coding on Khan Academy when he was in yr1, later on Codecademy.

DD is in year 2 and begged me to download an app called Tynker that they use at school

mummax3 · 27/01/2021 12:36

I'd start scratch around age 6 or 7 xx

InTheDrunkTank · 27/01/2021 15:32

DS started at about 6 and really got into it at 7. Scratch is the obvious place to start. Try the scratch tutorials and projects like this: projects.raspberrypi.org/en/codeclub/scratch-module-1

You don't need a class. If you do want a class you could try London SMP (currently online).
