Steiner schools

Hiya, I'm considering the local Steiner school as an option for my 8 year old daughter. She's ASD and although our local school is lovely she is just so stressed by it with a big class and standard learning styles which don't seem to be suiting her very well.... does anyone have any experience of Steiner who could comment? Are they any good for kids with SEN? Thanks x

I have no particular views on Steiner schools, but I know a fair few adults who went to the one in my area and they mostly have boringly normal jobs. My next-door neighbour just one example - he's a computer geek working for a large organisation. Another friend is a florist specialising in wedding / events (tbf she's self employed, but it's not really a very way-out career!)

They vary hugely like any school. For the right child they can be wonderful and nurturing for a different kind of child they can seem very restrictive. I genuinely feel that only you yourself can know whether it is right for your child. I know these threads can get heated but happy to discuss if you would like more detailed curriculum analysis.

I am a former Waldorf/Steiner student.

For the love of all that's holy, do NOT send your child to a Steiner school unless you want to spend the next several years fixing your child's incomplete education in most aspects of hard and social sciences.

I left in 2008 (I was 13) when I began to realize I was being indoctrinated into a weird cult. There is a lot of thought policing, both for the students and their parents - you will get some weird talks about how you are not supposed to engage in modern media (television, video games, popular music, books) since that is going to ruin your child's "imagination". Half of your lessons of Math will be comprised for reciting poetry (I am not joking). When I was there, there were no ICT classes, CRUCIAL nowadays to get anywhere in life.

My step daughter goes to a steiner school and i have always found the whole idea of it really strange. When she finished kindergarten aged 5 - 7 I looked at her end of year school report and i was shocked,I couldn't believe my partner had paid for her to just play no learning nothing. I said it was just like the kind of reports I used to write for my 2 year olds at nursery. She's 11 now and just finished the juniors and i can honestly say my partner might as well have flushed the school fees down the toilet. Her general knowledge is non existent her handwriting looks like a 5 year olds she doesn't even know how to write a poem or a story. Her school has been in a lot of trouble with Ofsted so as far as SEN goes I don't think the teachers would even notice if there was a problem.
