Year 5, Should we move school

My DS is in year 5 in a popular local independent school. He is in the top set in his year. We are generally layback and trust the school doing their job providing good education to my child. I am not educated in this country, thus not familiar with he UK system. We are getting increasingly unhappy with school. When trying to discuss future schools, his teacher push everything to the headmaster, while the headmaster just recommend purely based on what he sees on the assessment results (he did not do very well in the last assessment) without any consideration of the child character, strong and weak point, school suitability and so on. He does not appear to know much about DS. The recommended schools are either the local comprehensives and some mid range indies. I was expecting better considering DS in the top set in all subjects. I was wondering if there is anything wrong with DS study, as in every parent meeting I was told DS is top student. I went back to his form tutor asking what his current position in his year, how well he is doing with his work. The answer I got from the form tutor was she was not familiar with the details of each subjects and I should ask each of his subject tutor. So I have a form tutor don't know the overall performance of my DS, a headmaster not bothered about his future.

DS is very good at math. I let him try the UKMT math challenge at the beginning of year 5 at home, he is one mark away from a Silver. I asked his math teacher if I can enter him into the math challenge, but been told it is only for year 7plus. I know a lot of schools allow entry from year 3!

Ok after all these rant, should I consider move him to a different school at year 6? He is generally happy in the school. Considering this year is examination year for him, there are too many things to consider. Any advice?

St George is a very sporty school. Not sure if DS can fit in well. It is not as selective as most people think. If you fail at 11+, can still get in at 12+ as long as you committed to pay full fees (first hand experience from a close friend). He is too laid back and only tends to do bare minimum of what he has been asked to do and easily become transparent if not pushed. I used to be the same Blush.

About the CAT score, only the last test was his worse performance ever at average 129. He shockingly blew his quantitives which his normal score is between 135 to 141. He scored 141 in the school assessment during the same period!

129 CAT average is not a low score! Please don't make your son feel like he bombed it. That said I didn't think CAT scores went up to 141. Are you certain they are CAT results?

Cyqi · 20/01/2021 16:35

Maximum CAT score is 141

I wouldn’t move him in year 5. I think it’s too late unless he was getting bullied or another serious issue.

How does your Son feel about the potential move? Has he formed good friendships already?

MrsWonderland · 20/01/2021 17:34

It doesn't really add up. You say he's doing badly with a score of 129 and that he's achieved the top possible score of 141 previously. However earlier you said "he's not that bright to start with" and the school are advising a local comp. either there's a misunderstanding or you need a tutor with experience of performance and local academic schools who can advise.

LIZS · 20/01/2021 17:42

Or is he not fulfilling his potential with his schoolwork. Could be that the curriculum is not engaging or that he is experiencing barriers to his learning. Are his scores similar?

MrsWonderland · 20/01/2021 18:17

Even if the head wanted boys to stay on to 13, if you son is getting 141 in CAT tests (how often is he doing them - this is part of what I'm not sure adds up) then surely they would advise he should stay to 13 with a view to sitting Common Entrance for the most academically selective schools in the country! It would look good for the school if your son was doing so. Are you really sure he is getting these scores in CAT tests, why did you say he's not that bright if he is able to achieve that (lazy or not) and why do YOU think the school aren't recommending academic outcomes if he's gifted which he would be if he got maximum marks in CATs (is it all parts of the CAT in which he scores so highly or is VR and NVR pulling him down?)

His quantitive is normally the highest, verbal reasoning and spatial are the weakest, so normally average between 130 to 135

But what is the difference between them , does he have a spiky profile?

Cyqi · 20/01/2021 18:35

For that score my understanding is probably borderline for highly selective schools, any chance for Hampton? It is the only school having school bus passing us Grin

Average on its own is not helpful. If , for example, his English is more average he may not pass for even more middling schools on the day, although his Maths score is high. Don't base choice on school bus routes, these can change according to demand! I think you need to work out why the teachers are not pushing his apparent strengths or looking for ways to develop his relative weaker areas. Does he not achieve as well in the classroom?

Cyqi · 20/01/2021 18:40

His weakest is in English which he hates, but he is still in the top set in English at school. I am struggling to think how could he deal with creative writing and interviews with occasional stammering and tics Hmm

Hampton are usually looking for overall average of 130+ and kings 135. These will vary year to year but are a good marker in terms of the schools expectations.
In terms of CAT scores, what was your sons overall score? This is his average based on his scores in VR,NVR,quantitive and spatial .

Cyqi · 20/01/2021 22:56

His average CAT 132ish. Don't consider it spiky as the lowest is 126.

He would like to go to a school very strong in math, ideally a school full of geeks Grin
