Helping a child improve in English subject

Hello,

DS is KS2. A few years ago he was stronger in English and struggled in Maths. We have worked really hard in supporting him with his Maths. Now much stronger in Maths, and his English is lagging behind. Good with spellings, reluctant reader albeit likes certain topics and will pick up related books - trying to encourage him to read to one of us periodically. Would like to do this daily but with everything to juggle it can be a struggle to find time to do so. Comprehension he would rather guess than read the paragraph. Writing is getting there, albeit very slow and steady. Think he understands the grammar concepts, but often rushes to get it done and does not take care in this regard. Would love to hear of any suggestions to help get him to improve in the subject of English. Has group small group tuition outside of school for both Maths and English once a week.

TIA.

Read read read. Read with him. Read aloud to him, get him to read to you. Ask questions: not just about the text, but discuss the characters, the relationships, the tone, the atmosphere, the setting. Compare characters, look for imagery and themes, talk about the writer's style etc.

Also get a dictionary and a thesaurus

DM is a primary teacher and she swears by a book called the descriptosaurus (sp?) for helping kids improve their writing and vocabulary!

Great, thanks for the replies and tips. Will look up the book suggestion. He has a dictionary but not a thesaurus, so will get him one. Also, sounds like reading is the key - will have to make it happen and set a daily reminder everyday till we’ve established a daily habit of reading together.
