New reader books getting to difficult too quickly

My DS is in reception technically and now he is off I have been trying to find him some book schemes to read, but he starts off and it's easy 3 letter type words and then he's doing really well and we go onto the next stage and it's really long words with multiple diagraphs and it's too much for his concentration. Can someone suggest a scheme that is gradual?

Another recommendation for reading chest - offers more books at the same level

Sorry I posted on the wrong thread but even for single graphemes flash cards aren't the best or most effective way to learn. It's more effective to teach in context not in isolation. Unfortunately knowing a grapheme on a flash card doesn't automatically transfer to being able to read.

I'd guess they mean the flashcards have words using the digraph on to practice not literally a grapheme in isolation. But I shouldn't put words in pp's mouth!

If they've got a word on then they encouraging whole word memorisation

thirdfiddle · 15/01/2021 11:19

Depends how you use them.

Flash cards rely on decontextualised rote learning. We don’t need to drill children by rote. Reinforcement comes with consistent exposure in the activities of reading and writing in context. flash cards are a waste of time and even send children down the wrong path

It's a piece of card with a word on. To practice decoding. The parent is right there with the child to make sure they are decoding not rote learning. OP said the child was finding the quantity of words off putting, so they may benefit from practising the new skill (digraph or it may be sounding out two consecutive consonants) in a simpler context.

I do agree with the poster who said more easier books first would help though.

It's poor practice that can be detrimental to some children

thirdfiddle · 15/01/2021 15:21

That doesn't seem to be a universal view, DC's teachers used flash cards provided by a phonics scheme.

Norestformrz · 15/01/2021 17:53

Actually it is a well accept view. Flash cards are a throwback to the discredited Whole language theory
