How full are primary schools???

My partner and I have 2 primary school children and though keyworkers took the decision to keep our children out of school to limit COVID transmission.

We are now aware half the school is back in and we are worried that we have compromised our childrens education as with such high numbers in school it seems inevitable some kind of teaching will be happening there (as opposed to the first lockdown where it was childcare essentially)

How full is your school and do you think there is a difference between online learning and in school?

(I am a little frustrated by this as we envisaged schools would be used sparingly as really what was the point of shutting them)

It seems completely pointless to have the schools shut to a minority- they should just open to all.

I have to admit wrongly I am a little worried my children are missing peer interaction. Children will have opportunities to see their friends at school while there is no opportunity at home. This is another pill factor to schools. If you know your friends are all in children may wa my to go themselves....

100/400 ish

@BraeburnPlace

Have to say I am now getting that impression. Is the R number going to actually going to be reduced? Too many pull factors for schools and no real means to limit numbers.

My DD is in a class of 2.

nomorecheese · 07/01/2021 20:43

Ours is 50% full and they seem to be doing pretty near normal learning.

mids2019 · 07/01/2021 20:43

These ratios are only going to increase though arent they as times go on and people realise their kids are the only ones off. There will be those that keep their children out but these will be those that would have kept them out a fully open school as they are naturally COVID cautious.

About 1/3 in at ours. We have been told that teachers haven’t had time to respond to online work as they are so busy dealing with in class teaching- so yeh it’s annoying. We are technically entitled to a place but we feel it’s very much against the spirit if what the provision should be and we will muddle through without taking it, don’t want to be as bad as the rest of them.
To reassure you, the teaching provision in school is however limited so I don’t believe your kids will be better off academically and certainly no one will be health wise. You did the right thing and thank you for making that hard decision.

@NCstaythefuckathome

Thanks

Got to admit a tinge of cynicism about the school thing this time round.

We seem to be falling between 2 stools. R may not be sufficiently impacted by school 'closures' and children are suffering being out of a school environment.

Pity the poor teachers with the additional workload

It’s about 1/3 overall but I suspect that will drop on individual days as the Head has asked people to only be in on working days instead of full time.

Crakeandoryx · 07/01/2021 21:41

Just under half of the school. They're reassessing the intake criteria as they have too many apparently. We don't find out till Saturday. It's a nightmare 🥴

Mumofsend · 07/01/2021 21:48

@Crakeandoryx guidance issued today is clear they can't turn away anyone eligible and there is no limit

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/01/2021 21:48

About a quarter of pupils in I think. The school emailed saying they have only taken as many children as they feel is safe. They have prioritised vulnerable children and children with 2 key worker parents first, then some children with one key worker parent on a case by case basis. They will not be accepting any more children.

DS has a place as his dad is a key worker and although I'm not one I can't work from home. As they said children with 2 key worker parents got first priority I'm guessing there weren't many of those or we wouldn't have been offered a place.

RueDeWakening · 07/01/2021 21:51

There are no class teachers in our primary school, they are all working from home. There are cover teachers, HLTAs and TAs supervising hubs, but the hub children are watching the same Zoom lessons as the children at home.

There were 29 children in my year 1 hub today though, and several on our list who we expected to see didn't come in.

Really? Because my school is turning people away. Is there something that says they must take all children with a keyworker parent?

doctorhamster · 07/01/2021 21:53

Roughly a third

mamaduckbone · 07/01/2021 21:54

Approx 16 in from a primary school with 85 pupils. It varies a bit day to day depending on parents' work patterns.

CarlottaValdez · 07/01/2021 21:57

Thank you! Looks like I may be able to I dust the school takes DS in that case.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 07/01/2021 21:57

Approximately 10 per class

CarlottaValdez · 07/01/2021 21:57

To insist

I really hope that guidance is guidance only because I know of parents taking the piss on this one. The fillet schools are, the less effective the closures will be on reducing the spread, R won't come down, more will die and schools will be closed for longer hurting more children's education
Crakeandoryx · 07/01/2021 22:07

Mumofsend, that's interesting. We've all been told to provide evidence we don't work from home. Any critical worker at home has been told their places are being reconsidered as children would be accompanied.

This is proving very difficult because of the pressure we're under is huge, workload is increasing, hours are long and the work is highly confidential and conversations cannot be had around children. Police info, safeguarding etc. Also with 3-5 hours of work to get through per child it's just not doable.

Government agency departments will grind to a halt because parents won't be able to do their job.
