2021 yr6 SATs

After saying GCSEs and A levels can't go ahead as planned surely they won't still plough on with yr6 SATs? I don't think many people like them, they have already said that they will not use them in league tables this year. Although some secondary schools use them to set children they will have to have found a different way this year. I also think that the way they tried to use them last year in CAGs and the way they are used in normal years to predict a whole raft of GCSE projected grades is bonkers. This year more than any other year they will not be accurate for children whose education effectively ended in the middle of yr5 compared to those whose schools attempted to battle on with the curriculum in the summer term and who did not miss school last term.

DD has been doing some secondary level maths in school. She mentioned Total Maths when I was asking her about it. Anyone heard of that? I was going to email her teacher to ask for some pointers.
I hate the CGP books (she gets these as school homework books) so want something not like them!

Last year - and this was very exceptional circumstances, dealing with the shock and crazy conditions of the pandemic. Most of Y6 weren't even in school for that term.

If your DC has sat 11+, or getting high marks in "mock sats" there is no real qualitative learning in trying to get higher SATs. The "fun learning" should also stretch them in terms of depths of understanding of all sorts of things.

My 3rd DC is in Y6 and cancelling SATs the best news I have had this horrendous week.

@Catsneezies also my very able eldest is at superselective grammar - middle at brilliant comp - former grammar - useful prep for Year 7 IME is about shifting away from "primary school" approach (which the SATs is - rote learning, lack of critical thinking or problem solving) into a different, more self-starting mode. Get him reading more challenging books and material (English/ History/RE) and discussing it with you, and you could look at some KS3 Maths if so inclined. A bit of basic MFL and Music could also support confidence if not done any before.

Thanks, all really helpful. I'm also trying to encourage more independence by being much more "hands off" with homeschool this time. Helped by the fact that I don't need to help him with any 11+ either!

Oak Academy looks like a good start. Thank you

How exactly has he been getting 98%? It’s not scored as a percentage?

Catsneezies · 10/01/2021 19:16

He was given a score, don't know what it was, e.g. 196 out of 200, and worked out the percentage.

DD has found Corbett Maths quite stimulating if anyone is interested.
