Feltonfleet or St George's Junior Weybridge

My eldest DS just finished all his 7+assessment. He has got a place at St George's and is still waiting for Feltonfleet. I know this is a bit premature to ask but just thought to start the thread in case we don't get response immediately.

Does anyone know much about St George's particularly? This was a last minute decision so we never got a chance to visit the school. We visited Felton before the lockdown and really liked it. Our DS isn't that academic...and neither is that musical or sporty. He enjoys doing art very much but that's probably because at this age there isn't good or bad art so he just likes messing around with things. He is very sensitive and articulate. We felt Feltonfleet at the time was a good choice as it seems quite caring. He is currently in a very academic demanding school. While he doesn't stand out at school for being academic) or sporty, he is very well behaved and always get praised for trying his best. He seems to always be able to make close friends despite he is a quite shy and introvert child so I wouldn't say he is unhappy at school. However the whole 7+ assessment has been very stressful, especially to us as he doesn't seem to be the kind of kid that get things very fast. Given St George's goes all the way up to 18, that probably can save us the stress at 11/13 again.

Anybody have any thoughts on these two schools?

Just want to add that my DS is quite physically fit but just not very good at games with ball. Don't think his hand eye coordination is that great but he has great stamina and can run very well.

If I were you I'd go with St George's, the 11+ process isn't the best (to say the least!). Choose the through school and save the stress! I've never seen Feltonfleet but think St George's is a fabulous school

All children are SGJ school have to take the 11+ for SGC, no guarantees of getting a place unfortunately. Quite a lot go to other schools from the junior school

CooperH · 13/12/2020 08:30

Oh really? I thought the Junior school gets preferential treatment? That is definitely a factor to consider then.

St George's is very academic. I've heard of several children, who can't keep up the pace academically, being invited to look elsewhere.

Feltonfleet has a much more nurturing reputation.

That said, my own children don't go to either of these schools. This is just information from friends and local reputations.

CooperH · 13/12/2020 09:51

Thanks Lindy2. I'm surprised that SGJ is more academic because their entrance assessment seems quite easy and only lasted an hour this time due to Covid. Whereas all the other schools tend to last half of day. We really don't know much about this school as it's a last minute decision but I'm glad we applied because we also chose Milbourne Lodge as another choice but DS did not get a place. If we didn't apply SGJ, we would really panic now as no offers have been received! We always thought Feltonfleet would be a fairly safe choice but saw about 40 children in their assessment last weekend!

How are the facilities in SGJ compared to Feltonfleet?

SGJ has really good facilities, lots of sports pitches, space and an outdoor pool. I've not seen FF and like PP my child doesn't go to the school ( but has been for matches.)

@CooperH , places at Feltonfleet at 5 and 7 are really sought after. It's viewed as a very good mixed prep where you can have dc with different abilities and they can all thrive there. The location and bus routes mean you can live in south west london as well as Surrey and travel there. For example dc come from Putney to Feltonfleet (with the boarding option when they are older).

St G junior is a great school too and your ds will have an excellent education with less pressure at 11 if you choose that option.

CooperH · 13/12/2020 20:12

@singingrain1223, thanks! We are living in South west London too but planning to move to Surrey. You are right in terms of convenience. We might not sell our house quick enough and might end up commuting in the first 6 months or so. For that reason Feltonfleet is a more preferred choice. Let's see if he can get a place though. His brother got a 3+ place there next year and I really hope that can give him a bit advantage too...it will really break my heart if he got rejected again given the amount of support we gave him....

Good luck, I'm sure it will work out esp if you have a 3+ sibling place already.

reefedsail · 16/12/2020 06:25

Would it not be better to go somewhere determinedly non-selective like Barfield?

I would definitely choose Feltonfleet over St Georges. They will then give you advice about the best fit of school for your DS at 13, as that is their job. It neededn't be traumatic at that point, especially if you are willing to consider weekly boarding.

CooperH · 17/12/2020 09:48

Thank you everyone! I think we will go for Feltonfleet at the end. Just got the offer which is a relief! I got really worried and contacted the school. Apparently there was something wrong with the post.

@CooperH ,
Congrats! What great news, I'm sure your ds x 2 will be really happy there.

Hi there. Was wondering if you go with FF and how is it going now? We are in similar situation. Thanks
