Trumpet players - how old when started to learn?

Hi

My ds is 9 in January. Is he too young to start the trumpet? He already plays one brass instrument but wants to go onto the trumpet but his teacher says he is too young.

Thanks

M

ds(9) tried for the trumpet but found the tenor horn suited him better. I'm sure there are younger than him doing trumpet

My ds2 (who also has dyspraxia) started in the summer aged 9 ,he plays the cornet which is held closer to the biody and is a little easier if you have small hands .It has beena big success and i would recommend it

My son (who was born with one hand) also plays cornet.

He started when he was 7 as the teacher wanted to wait for his front adult teeth to come in first.

He loves it. Infact, at his school, all of Y4 learn to play the cornet for one term.

Mahonia

I play cornet and tenor horn but started 'late', age 10 I think.

I would have said wait for adult teeth but - if he's already playing another brass instument, why wait ?

What does he play currently?

Oh crap, been sucked into a dead thread

fullmoonfiend · 08/11/2007 12:44

I started aged 9. I was crap, mind...

I don't think he is too young to start, but do be aware that they are heavy, and he may be better off with a cornet, which is almost identical but shorter and easier for a child to hold. If he holds out for the trumper, the weight of it might affect his stamina. Be aware also that the presure may affect the way his teeth grow.

I was about 13 when I started playing the cornet, it was too late really.

My dh is a brass teacher and always insists they have their adult front top & bottom teeth. They weigh pretty much the same - just tested it out. Trumpets & cornets have the same length of tubing - cornets just more compact.

He teaches children younger than 9 as long as they have adult teeth.
