It might help if you gave his age!

kannayya · 10/12/2020 16:01

he is 7 y old and in year2

What do mean? There's nothing wrong with it!! My DD is the same age and his spelling is much better.

LadyCatStark · 10/12/2020 16:07

I guessed at average year 2 level. He needs to work on paragraphs, punctuation, writing speech correctly and re-reading his sentences to make sure they make sense. He could also work on his handwriting but perhaps his school don’t do cursive writing.

LadyCatStark · 10/12/2020 16:07

Agree his spelling is good though!

EskSmith · 10/12/2020 16:14

It is good fo y2. To. Improve, handwriting, make sure capital letters are twice the size of lower case letters eg cC. Spacing between words. Look at how to use speech marks. As lady stark says reread to check it makes sense.

kannayya · 10/12/2020 16:17

kulaexchange , LadyCatStark thanks.
good to know his spelling look better. I would like to help him to understand about n paragraphs, punctuation and writing speech etc. but not sure how to give that practice.
He learned cursive writing very well at start and now write when insisted (cant force him on this often) He picked up non cursive from peers which is giving me lot of pain . he now think hand writing and writing are two different things . I gave hime one or 2 hand writing (one liners) practice. but trying hard to find effective ways to tune him back to cursive :)

Unless left handed, writing on the back side of a page where the ring coils interfere with the arm/hand never helps.

kannayya · 10/12/2020 19:07

he is right handed, I try suggesting to use the pages on front side. thank you

Have you got an issue with it? It's pretty excellent for Y2? And i have a gifted Y2 who has amazing vocab etc but doesn't write or punctuate any better.

kannayya · 10/12/2020 19:15

On the 2nd day today as I asked to do any,he created story map for his story ,which explains better of his intentions . which I got confused to understand. so I am little worried.

It's a cute story. Ultimately, he'll need to think about things from the perspective of the person reading it and whether he's giving enough information for it to make complete sense. There are a couple of places where it doesn't quite work. But it's a clever plot with a twist. The title page actually gives away too much!!

Tippexy · 10/12/2020 19:34

Is English your second language OP? His work is good!

FatGirlShrinking · 10/12/2020 19:34

They don't start with paragraphs until years 3 and 4 I've screenshot the year 2 national curriculum requirements as I do t want to put DDs school website address but you can find them online

Here's the appendix 2 for years 2,3 and 4 as you can see he is hitting the requirement for his age

I think it's mean to post your child's work here. I know you're only doing it out of concern.

But any of my kids would hate me doing that.

kannayya · 10/12/2020 19:52

@ EarringsandLipstick, he is not possesive of any of his works, and very generous kid (I can say this with his art works in past). I dint say this to him ,but he would love to read for any.

As his understanding about the world is only positive, and confident about what he writes he does blame me for sharing anywhere, which makes it hard for him to think about reviews.

@Tippexy
Yes,you are write. Even with my own language I write only from past experiences and memorable stuff.

@FatGirlShrinking

Thank you. With 2 more terms to go ,hopefully he would advance in basic punctuation from current.

Though I dont want to comapare , I love to know if I can be helpful anyway to do his ending part. He often closes very quickly (one in the past was much more clearer as he wrote it in couple of days than at one sitting now )

My DS might have produced something like that in yr 2 I think. Probably with worse handwriting!

He had some assessments done (for other reasons) when he was about yr 6 and it was strongly suggested he start typing as his handwriting wasn't going to improve - well he could already type but actually he did (grow up a bit and) sort his writing out over the next couple of years. Then won an academic scholarship to a selective independent at 13. His handwriting's still not great but we're not at all worried about his GCSEs this year.

Please be reassured that your son sounds very well on track. Keep him writing, keep him reading. By all means talk to him about punctuation - if he likes writing speech, ask him how he knows someone's talking in a book he's reading, and introduce it that way. His handwriting might actually improve by doing other activities separate to writing his own stories - they need to be able to get stuff down as they think of it, and focussing on writing "properly" can get in the way of that. Tracing and copying and drawing; or "special" writing like Christmas cards or copying out a short poem and drawing a picture to illustrate. Have fun!

Momr · 10/12/2020 20:52

Thanks all, one thing I had to get him write some thing like this is as a way to get his hand writing back to earlier ones which i.e cursive and bit good, Sorry for typos anywhere , he doesn't mind me sharing / giving away his works.

skankingpiglet · 11/12/2020 01:02

It looks comparable to my yr2 DD's work too OP, and she is working at expected levels. She is capable of much neater writing and much better sentence structure/punctuation etc than your example, but not together. She can only do either one or the other well, or a imperfect combination. She struggles to get her ideas down as quickly as she thinks them out, which leads to messy writing and poor sentence structure/missed out words and syllables. As others have suggested, our biggest focus at the moment is teaching her to re-read what she has written (not what she thinks she has written!) to ensure it makes sense, then making the corrections. Her teacher is confident her hand will naturally catch up with her brain at some point, but for now we will plug away with trying to slow her brain down a little.

Iamnotthe1 · 11/12/2020 06:56

Has he been watching something as inspiration? That story is the John Lewis Christmas advert from around eight years ago.

In terms of his writing, I'd say it was around the expected level for Year Two, or will be at the end of the academic year, with a little potential for reaching 'Greater Depth'.

Things to work on:

  • handwriting,
  • using conjunctions to join clauses rather than start new sentences each time,
  • making sure each clause is its own sentence unless joined,
  • refining his use of the more ambitious vocabulary.

If you want to look at paragraphing then base it on location: each new place is its own new paragraph.

BlueStargazer · 11/12/2020 19:12

We did Mr Teach cursive handwriting on you tube and saw a huge improvement.
