Schools in Brixton, South London

We are thinking about primary schools and have to apply by the middle of January. We are in Brixton, South London.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of schools in the local area? Sudbourne has a fantastic reputation. Jubilee on Tulse Hill seems to be on the up. Rosendale and Corpus Christi have good reputations too. It's really hard because we can't visit and have to go on advice, virtual meetings and lookingthings up on the internet.

Thanks for your help!

Judith Kerr is excellent and half their places are awarded via lottery so even if you are very close you still can get in.

All the kids learn German and the school has a strong performing art offering. The academic results are some of the best in the country

It depends whereabouts in Brixton you live really. And whether you have an religious credentials. If you can give us a rough idea of that I can tell you more.

Thanks for your replies. We are near the big Sainsburys, so about equal distance between Jubilee and Sudbourne. Not religious.

It must be so hard to choose this year. I really feel for you. The videos are guess are helpful - some schools have maybe poured more money into them than others - and, as you say, you've got the Ofsted reports and the .gov.uk site to compare SATs results: www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/compare-schools

Without resorting to hearsay, here's what I know.

From where you live I'd say Sudbourne is a realistic option. Intake is 45 but should be expanding to 90 from next year with the junior school moving to a brand-new building at the end of Lambert Road. It's an ever-popular choice. But bear in mind the last Ofsted inspection report is now over 10 years old. Despite that I'd be happy with Sudbourne if I had the option.

St Judes is not far from you. It used to be that you had to attend church to be in with a chance but now I think they have opened up the number of general places to non-church goers. Could be an option for you if you prefer a smaller one-form entry option to Sudbourne's soon-to-be three-form entry.

Jubilee is also very close. Historically it's not performed as well as Sudbourne and St Judes, but from paper seems to be improving.

Those are probably your most local, realistic options.

To be in with any chance at Corpus one parent has to be baptised Catholic and you should have been attending church every Sunday for the last two years.

Further into Brixton you've got Stockwell and Hillmead.

I think you're probably too far from Rosendale.

And as the poster above says Judith Kerr in Herne Hill chooses its own admissions from a wide radius.

Sudbourne isn't great in 22, go for Jubilee ( on the up), CC, Rosendale

Judith Kerr, Stockwell
