Three marks under at 11+ appeal or not?

My DD (who has had no tuition and who's school was put into special measures last year), has scored 118 on the 11+, and she needed 121.

I would almost feel better if she'd scored less than 115 and not been close.

I've emailed the head, who is going to speak to her teacher to see how she's doing academically.

It was pointed out that having the test late (a long time after the practice one) due to the bubble closing, could be a factor.

My DD has also suffered the loss of her only uncle recently (which affected me very badly), and my dad is terminally ill, and she has wet the bed through worrying about him and having nightmares about him dying.

I'm kind of lost in all this.

Please let me know if I should have posted this in Secondary Education.

Anyone? We're in Bucks if it helps?

If you are at a school in Bucks then I believe prior to sitting the exam, the school gives an indication of “suitability” for grammar score for each child. These are used as grounds for selection review (which is different to appeal which comes later). Someone might correct me, but this is definitely the case at out of county partner schools - schools where children also sit the 11+ at their own school.

I would ask the school what they think to be honest and ask how they would grade her. You would be looking for 1s and 2s to be successful.

There is a lot of info on the 11+ forum in the Bucks section - search for selection review.

Thank you.

In Kent the head teacher's appeal takes place before you get the results so adjustments will have been made (or not). Not sure how it works in bucks.

@Clymene It’s different in Bucks. If the parents feel that the child should have achieved 121, then they can request a selection review. This requires a letter from the head with proof that the score doesn’t reflect the abilities of the child. The information will be compared to the grading the head gave prior to the exam. So, a child graded 1s with ridiculously high CAT scores or similar stands a reasonably decent chance at being passed, although the further you get from the 121, the less likely the chance of being successful.

Appeal comes at a later date, if the child passes the test but then doesn’t get a place at the school.

@Zodlebud the school have said they are happy to support us.

Only one passed, then there was another with a similar score to us, then another with 111 who is also going to ask for a review.

It's all quite daunting.

I've posted in the 11+ forum, but no one has replied.

That’s great news. I know children who have been successful at selection review so it’s definitely worth trying. You have absolutely nothing to lose!!

Thank you so much.
