Will try to keep this brief.. Not long after starting school DS starting mentioning that a boy had hit him along with others in his class and this has according to ds and other children been the occuring on a daily basis. On a couple of occasions ds has said he doesn't want to go to school. Today, I went into the cloakroom and witnessed this boys erratic behaviour for myself. DS doesn't want to hang his coat up by himself and I'm now wondering is it because this other boys hook is right next to his? I mentioned to the teacher that DS was upset about this boy and she said there is no one in particular in the classroom that behaves badly and if it does happen they deal with it immediately - fair enough. I totally understand that this sort of thing will inevitably happen, but if it does continue and the other children are all getting distressed I'd like to feel that the school will step in and speak to the parents to try and get this boy to behave. Is there a standard procedure?

i would speak to the headmistress - they must deal with this

Yes, speak to the headmistress if you have got no joy from the teacher. Be aware that the boy in question may have SNs which affect his behaviour - although this just means he needs more supervision, not that things can carry on as he is.

And work on some coping strategies with DS, because every class has a child who hits out. All children need to feel they can defend themselves (even by telling the teacher, doing things with a friend, avoiding the 'bad lad' etc).
