Are there any teachers out there that can comment on the age of this writing please? And what needs to be improved? Thankyou.

Probably year 2ish? Very similar to what my class might write. Focus on spellings and using co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions.

0ellenbrody0 · 22/11/2020 15:51

My Y2 class could not write like that yet - lockdown effect! I would say that would look mid/end of spring term Y2 in normal times.
Agree with PP: spellings (because, colourful) and use of conjunctions.

CommanderBurnham · 22/11/2020 16:04

I'd say y3? Handwriting is joined up but sentences and vocabularies are simpler.

Constanttaxiservice · 22/11/2020 17:56

year 3

MrPickles73 · 22/11/2020 17:56

He's summer born yr 3 Confused. He was allegedly on target prior to lockdown but I thought his standard of writing was quite poor Blush. During lockdown we worked hard on writing. Speed is the main issue. His handwriting has improved massively this term and he has good ideas but getting it down on paper is painful.

I would have said aged 7. With the spelling, he seems to be missing out sounds mid-word so might need some help/practice with chunking and perhaps re-reading to make sure he's 'transcribed' every sound in a word, rather than getting the first and last syllable down and fudging the middle.

bookishtartlet · 22/11/2020 18:02

I've got some 12 and 13 year olds in my classes who couldn't write to that standard. As long as he is making progress, don't fret.

jerometheturnipking · 22/11/2020 18:07

That could be one of my brighter 6 year olds, or a just turned 8 year old (Scottish system so our years work differently). I think based on the small snippet you've posted and your further comment, he's doing grand. He's making progression. It quite often is painful getting 7 year olds to get words on the page. Don't push it, he needs to find his own motivation to improve his writing stamina. If you're doing it at home let him take a break when he wants to, and you could try getting him to go back to it once he's had a rest.

underneaththeash · 22/11/2020 18:08

I think that's pretty good for year 3, he's using capitals and punctuation correctly.
They work in vocab more in year 4-5.

lyssie29 · 22/11/2020 22:00

My daughter is year 3 and she doesn't write like that. She doesn't write joined up yet and her spelling is terrible as she still writes how she speaks it. I find it very hard to understand what she is writing. This now makes me feel that she is quite far behind.

xyzandabc · 22/11/2020 22:13

For yr3 I'd say that's just fine. Writing is joined up, neat and legible. Content simple but written in sentences.

Somewhere in the middle of year 3 for both handwriting and spag. Not the neatest writing in the class but nowhere near the worst. Factual mostly correct spellings. Structure and content will come as their vocabulary increases.

MrPickles73 · 22/11/2020 23:06

Thankyou xyzandabc, perhaps not as bad as I'd feared Confused. As I said his handwriting has improved massively. He has some good, creative ideas but is very slow getting them down on paper.

I think that's beautiful handwriting and interesting information included in the passage. Next steps for me would be joining words to extend the sentences. I'd guess p3/p4?

MediocreReclusive · 23/11/2020 23:17

Agree it's good enough for a Year 3, especially a summer born one who missed a lot of year 2. Panic not :)

Fizbosshoes · 23/11/2020 23:22

My DS is 10 and his writing is similar , possibly not as good as that

Mover437 · 23/11/2020 23:34

Teacher here. I suspect that the main reason that this peice wasn't great was that your son couldn't remember what happened on the trip. Its very boring as recounts go. He could benefit from lots of talking about anecdotes and telling anecdotes in an interesting way. This will hopefully improve his content, which is the most important thing.

Grammar - sentence structure. Does he know that every sentence has a subject and a verb? Can he identify these in his sentences?

Handwriting is very much what y2 into y3 often do produce.

Wwydiywm · 24/11/2020 21:16

Absolutely fine for year 3, don't worry

annie987 · 27/11/2020 19:13

Perfectly on track for year 3. Nothing to worry about there
