Remember a couple of years back a new thing came in to define the teacher's role more specifically.
There was a lots of things that teachers were no longer supposed to do - can anyone remember what it was called and where i amight find the full document?

our head has jsut decided that TAs are no longer to photocopy/wash paint pots, prepare resources etc etc If we want then we have to get them, if we use them we have to clean them and put then away. TAs are not to be used as 'skivvys'. Fair enough what are they to do whilst we run around doing all of this alone??

Can anyone help please?
thanks

I think it was called "Workforce Reform".

FWIW - I used to have parents in every afternoon to help tidy up the classroom when I worked in Reception. I also used yoghurt pots for paint, and threw them out.

Auntyquated · 18/10/2007 20:00

this could be it

Auntyquated · 18/10/2007 20:04

yoghurt pots is a good idea

parents helping isn't an option because of the nature of the unit

i will look for Workforce reform as the linked docuemnt isn't what i need really

How bizarre that you can't treat TAs as 'skivvies' but you as a teacher are expected to act like a skivvy

Jobs like that need to be done, to label them 'skivvying' helps no-one.

Lil · 18/10/2007 20:07

and I would have thought those sorts of jobs support the staff - anf TAs are Support staff!

All this PC language is irritating and your head needs to focus on what really matters!

sigh..I should be putting the kids to bed but as a teacher I'm so cross for you!!

Littlefish · 18/10/2007 20:07

That's the one.

Is it worth working out for your headteacher the cost of you doing a certain job, and the cost of a TA or unqalified general assistant doing it.

Sounds ridiculous to me. Any headteacher worth their salt would rather have teachers teaching, planning and assessing than washing up paint pots and photocopying.

In KS2 we teachers had PPA when the children went swimming. During the same time, our class TAs prepared resources for the following week.

Auntyquated · 18/10/2007 22:18

thankl you -you have made me feel better!

she wnats the TAs to deal with the calss whilst we wash up----the TAS do NOT wnat to.
we have chuildren aged 4 -18 so it isn't like rading astory to a class os biddable, concentataing KS1s. there are many difficulties in each group (don't want to give too much away as i may be recognised) TAs ought not to deal with this.

She sounds like an arse

Here's a plan.

At a pre-arranged time, ask your TA to take over while you wash pots (with cotton wool in your ears). Try and do it on a windy or wet day so the children are particularly difficult. (You might even like to consider giving them fruit shoots!)

Get the TA to send for headteacher to help support her in sorting out the ensuing mayhem!

I am, of course, joking. However, I would like to repeat that the Head sounds like an arse

If your Head continues trying to enforce this, I would suggest going to your Union and encouraging your TAs to go to theirs.

Auntyquated · 19/10/2007 16:29

i really like littlefish's idea and would actually do it if it didn't upset the TAs; they are all loively and i couldn't do it to them.
a nutter and an arse are fairly accurate descriptions; also add bully.
the union would have a field day at our place!

YG - I've lost all my MSN ...i had to download new version and it said I had no friends.
Do i still appear on your list? i've lost your MSN addy too.

Hi Outed. I really hope I didn't offend you with my comments about mayhem ensuing. I was simply responding to Auntyquated's description of her class.

"we have chuildren aged 4 -18 so it isn't like rading astory to a class os biddable, concentataing KS1s. there are many difficulties in each group (don't want to give too much away as i may be recognised) TAs ought not to deal with this".

I have worked with some incredibly talented TAs (and some truly dreadful teachers!) and would absolutely never, ever undervalue, or underestimate their skills.

I was being flippant. Sorry.

Phew

clam · 28/10/2007 14:18

At my school, we have 2 part-time LSAs shared between 4 classes, who spend the bulk of their time dealing with 2 SEN children, one of whom is new to the school and came with no funding allocation. I dream of being able to ask either of them to put up a display - frankly, they haven't the time. I'd clean forgotten about "workforce remodelling." What a farce! If I want anything done in my classroom (or basic admin outside of it) I have to do it myself.
Can't hack this job much longer!

ScaryScienceT · 28/10/2007 14:22

Ah, to work in a state school (j/)

tigerschick · 28/10/2007 14:36

Just wanted to add my voice to the shout of "arse" in the direction of AQ's head!
Can't understand the thinking that leads someone to the conclusion that it is more appropriate to have teachers washing up and support staff teaching. It beggars belief, it really does!
If she is worried about the TAs being 'exploited' then she should consider employing non-trained staff to do these tasks.
How ridiculous.

1dilemma · 01/11/2007 00:51

Bizarre sounds a teeny bit like my job sometimes, the public sector seems to loose the plot on so many occasions.

1dilemma · 01/11/2007 00:52

Sorry by that I mean what lil and littlefish and outed said!!
