20-25 min walk to school

Trying to decide on primary schools for reception next Sept. My preference is a 20 min walk away, does anyone do similar? There is no parking and standstill traffic so driving isn’t an option, just worried about the heavy rain days and the knackered 4 year old (August born so one of the youngest). The schools we mostly like the sound of are all 20, 25, 30 min walk.

There is a school closer, just over 10 mins walk but I’m not as keen. It’ll go on as one of our six options but not very high up.

I understand that I may not get either (application is a preference, not a choice etc.) so just trying to get opinions on the walk.

It's so frustrating isn't it OP, with not having last year's data or being able to visit because of Coronavirus.

Walk wise, it does depend on your child's fitness and stamina. My middle child August born needed a not of coaxing and snacks for her mile long walk, but her brother who is younger now does double the length no problem at all, but he's had more practice. Right now, I'm glad mine have the exercise, with other parents worrying about their child's weight and fitness with all extra curricular sports activities being closed. I'm also glad they have the resilience to be out in all weathers.

Thanks all!

Think I’ll need to see how she gets on with the scooter, she doesn’t use it much so may have to encourage that a bit more as today the “come ooonnn” got old, quickly. If I was all about the quick journey, I’d be left with the failing school round the corner so I guess I need to suck it up and get her practising as it’s either 20 or 30 mins, there are no closer options.

I may be focusing on the walk as it’s the only thing that is tangible as I’m picking the school based on their website basically.

What about a bike seat on your bike?

I used to do that walk with daughter on scooter.
When she got tired I would just put my hand on her back and push her as I walked.
Rainy days will be a stinker though.

I’m not brave enough to cycle here, and definitely not with her on the back. Partly because of an accident I had a few years ago, partly because people drive like maniacs here 😂

Choose your preferred/ better school and don’t worry about the walk

We walked that distance to school from home. You do it because there’s no option! I was at school from 4 3/4. My DNs have walked up a steep hill to school. They live in a valley - school is on the hill! Again around 20 mins due to terrain. They did it from 4 too with a scooter for the reluctant boy!
