Where are you going to be living? Is your child a boy or a girl?

zaphodbeeble · 26/10/2020 20:35

Manchester Grammar if you’re child is a boy

Why have you picked those three schools? Do you know where you want to live - the schools aren't particularly close to each other. What's your plan for secondary school?

DingDon · 26/10/2020 22:43

My child is Boy, I am no idea for secondary school because my son is studying for year 3. Where I live depend on which one private school can offer a place for my son.

Wonderful school, they run minibus routes in each day from several directions too.

I asked about secondary schools because generally private junior/prep schools are more geared up to prepare for some schools than others. And, for example, if you're interested in grammar school (Trafford which is where Altrincham is, is a grammar school system, whereas Manchester itself isn't) at secondary school level that might influence your choice now, compared to if you are sure you want to continue in private. Plus, it's worth thinking about logistics for getting to any future secondary school (unless you're planning to rent in the short term and move later). If you are targeting Manchester Grammar, for example, it will be much easier for your child if you live in Didsbury, compared to living in Cheadle Hulme.

@RedskyAtnight: Thanks for your input. Up till now, I am no idea my son can handle or not at Grammar Secondary School in future. So, would you have any comment which private school is well compare with the captioned three private schools. It is because I am a new guy to move in Manchester.

Lady Barn have the an excellent record of getting boys to MGS, better than the others you mention!

Captainj1 · 27/10/2020 19:30

Altrincham Prep tends to prepare boys for Altrincham Grammar for Boys which is a state grammar. Not all go there though, some go to MGS, Cheadle Hulme, st ambrose etc.

There are lots of good private schools in south Manchester so I would go and look around some and get a feel for which would suit your son. I suspect most will have space for him. If you can get him in to a junior school that has a senior section you can possibly avoid him having to sit the 11+ exam (eg Kings doesn’t require sitting the 11+ if you join before year 5).

@DingDonCaptainj1:thanks for your input. You mean I should get him to all through from Junior to six form?Would you have any idea of other private school in south Manchester?

There are lots of private schools in south Manchester/east Cheshire. For single sex, look at Altrincham Prep (juniors only), MGS (junior and senior)

For co-Ed, Cheadle Hulme School (junior and senior), Hale Prep (smaller, junior), the Ryleys (junior), Kings Macclesfield (junior and senior), Stockport Grammar (junior and senior), wilmslow prep (junior), Pownall Hall (junior), abbotsford prep (junior), st bedes (junior and senior), moor allerton prep (junior)....

I think you need to decide whether you want a smaller school or a larger one, or whether you want to try to avoid your son having to sit the 11+ entrance exam. All of the above schools have good reputations but they are all different in terms of size and facilities. Some are selective and some are not.

My children go to one of the junior prep schools I have named above. It is non selective and has around 200 pupils in total so they get a very individualised experience. It has good facilities (not as amazing as some) and they have great academic outcomes with the vast majority of children going on to the selective secondary school of their choice. I chose it because of its location (I bought a house first, then looked at schools, rather than choosing a school first) and because of the feel of it when I looked round, and it’s reputation. It is a diverse school with lots of nationalities represented which I like (although we are English, I like my kids to see diversity and interact with children of different backgrounds).

Yes no problem, and apologies for the delayed response, I’ve only just seen your message.

Both St Ambrose and Cheadle Hulme have some problems, so I would avoid them if I were you.
