To talk to teacher or not?

Hi all, not sure whether to have a chat to my ds teacher. He's been really reluctant to go to school and the school haven't really supported him with his reading. I definitely think the two are linked!

I had a meeting with the teacher a while back and I felt my concerns about his reading were dismissed a little.

Since then I have started a reading program outside of school. DS loves it - it's the first time I have ever seen him read without a huge tantrum. This program has identified he might have an eye tracking weakness and that blending is difficult for him. So we have some exercises now to work on both.

I am happy with the reading program and the support I get from the team there but I am wondering whether to mention these discoveries to his teacher? I would hope she would help him more but since our last meeting I do wonder if I would just get an eye roll!

I feel sad the school doesn’t share your concerns. However at least you are trying to improve things for him. Phonics was supposed to be the way forward for every child. I’m not certain about that as posters on here do have dc with problems and there doesn’t seem to be a plan B.

@Guymere me too! As I know it's not me being a pushy parent! I just want the best for him and at the moment his reading is so behind and he is becoming quite conscious of it.

I agree there doesn't seem to be a plan b. I am so certain the ds is not the only kid who phonics hasn't worked for.

They sound a bit rubbish.

You might like to try the Dyslexia Quest on Nessy to get an idea of what could be happening.

I would absolutely push it, we bitterly regret being fobbed off and will now have to pay for private support for twice as long. Those responses are ridiculous.

Please, please, please don't try to tell the teachers their job!

Then the teachers should do their job.

I think some are just better at it than others. Most teachers I know are concerned about DC falling behind. They do try and do something. They do engage the SendCo and talk to parents about how to help. They put in strategies and interventions. Not everything works of course but they do engage with the problem.
