It’s a big decision, particularly if you were both previously on the shielding list. Why don’t you talk with the school and ask to see their risk assessment and hear about all the measures they have in place. The guidance is that children of shielding parents should return to school now so you would most likely have to actually remove him from school if you’re too worried to send him. Others may disagree but I think this will make it harder for him when you do finally decide that it’s safe to send him to school.

My husband was/is shielding. We were like you, but decided to send DS in. However, the school risk assessment means nothing to me. They will try their best, but the teachers will be crossing bubbles and the kids mostly have siblings in other years, so no risk assessment will put my mind at ease.

The main reason why he'll go in is because the cases around here are very low and are rising very slowly. I've emailed and spoken to the headteacher. I told her that I plan to take him out as soon as we become concerned about the rate of case increases in my area. She was very supportive. She didn't say anything about taking him off the register, and she just said to state our reasons why. I'm not expecting his teacher to go out of her way to send homework, but I'm hoping for some vague idea of what to do teach him.

The government-funded online school is here:

Are you planning to withdraw him completely to home educate him? That is straightforward and you can do it on demand. Come over to the Home Ed board if you want to chat about it. However, if the school is oversubscribed then when you do want him to return to school, you won't be able to get him back into that school and will have to send him to another one, or keep home educating while waiting and hoping a place comes up at your preferred school.

If he is going into Reception at the usual age (i.e. he was still four years old on 31 August) then you could exercise your right to defer his start. That way the place would be kept waiting for him. He would need to start by the time he reaches Compulsory School Age in the term after his fifth birthday, or at the beginning of summer term, whichever is earlier. See the School Admissions Code.

School is now statutory again so Normal procedures apply. This is going to be long term so best to look at ways to get your child back into school with their support.
