Ok wise mumsnetters I've just come off the phone to a friend whos son is in key stage 2 in a village primary school. Half of his class have moved "up" into year 3 as they should be and the remaining half have stayed with year 2. In education terms are you allowed to mix the two stages together???
I've told her I'll ask you, she hasn't ever experienced the power of mumsnet

Lots of schools do mixed classes like this.

I know they do, they even do it at ours... but can they mix juniors with infants?

Our local school is combined from reception to year 7 and they have mixed classes from year1 upwards so i guess they must be allowed

Yes, they can mix any year groups. A Y2/Y3 mix can be tricky, simply in planning terms for the teacher as they are working with 2 different key stages, but no trickier than say YR/Y1, where they are in the same boat. I think it usually means that teachers really plan to the children's needs, rather than simply following the year group plan, which is 'a good thing' in my book. HTH

Yes, but the poor teacher has to plan to different curriculums. This is hard work in any mixed class, but more difficult when you are working across key stages. It shouldn't make any difference to the pupils.

At one stage, when I was helping in our children's school we had Reception, year 1, and part of year 2 in together.

It was busy, busy!

I think her concern is that although he's going into the other class for science and something else - I think she said ICT - he appears to be doing year 2 work in his class
