Is it terrible that 90% of DC2s Reception school uniform is second hand?

I’m sorting everything out and feel bad about it. Most of it is hand me downs from DC1 and the jumpers and trousers are faded/bobbly. I think I might have left it too late go order a logoed jumper now anyway if the majority opinion was this was considered bad form. I could get new trousers though.

What do we think?

Get new if you can.

Marmite27 · 17/08/2020 14:34

I have two of the same sex. Most of DC2’s will actually be third hand as some of it has come from their cousin. When the little gets there they’ll be in year 4, 2 and reception.

Personally I’ll make sure that the first day set is 100% new. But If it’s not possible to source it, it’s not possible.

linmanuel · 17/08/2020 14:35

No. I think it's fine.

LunaLoveFood · 17/08/2020 14:36

Definitely not terrible. Ds2 had mostly second hand, which has now been passed on to someone else so now 3rd hand.

It's a pain now they go to different schools (and won't ever be at the same school again) so it seems such a waist buying brand new. Unfortunately the schools second hand uniform sale isn't operating at the moment.

RogueV · 17/08/2020 14:37

It’s fine!!!

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 17/08/2020 14:37

I'd get a new jumper if you can manage it as this is what will stand out. They will all mostly be in brand new jumpers.

Brakebackcyclebot · 17/08/2020 14:38

It is fine! And environmentally very good.

My youngest DC has rarely had new uniform.

howlathebees · 17/08/2020 14:38

It’s fine

gonewiththerain · 17/08/2020 14:40

It’s fine you won’t worry when it gets cut up with scissors, covered in glue or paint or goes missing

Singerleon · 17/08/2020 14:42

My DC is having 75% second hand uniform for pre-school... I can afford to buy all new but we have a friend who is changing schools and because of COVID only wore their uniform from Sept until March so it seems a shame to throw it out. I’m coming from a waste/environment aspect.

UsernameNotValid · 17/08/2020 14:42

Most of my kids uniforms have been second hand (I try to buy second hand anything for environmental reasons) but I wouldn't use anything that was very obviously faded/bobbled for school.

RoseMartha · 17/08/2020 14:46

It is fine. My dc when they were at primary wore stuff that was second or third hand mixed in with some new where needed.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 17/08/2020 14:47

DS is my first child, he's still got all second hand, I went out and bought it as 5 new logo jumpers was crazy money

myworkingtitle · 17/08/2020 14:49

It’s fine. I always buy second hand for environmental reasons, as well as budget!

JazzleRazzle · 17/08/2020 14:50

Don’t be daft! If I can buy something in reasonable condition second hand then I always do, even if we do have the money for a new version. Why would you waste money on new things, that money can then be used elsewhere on other things that you want to buy or do!

treeeeemendous · 17/08/2020 14:52

Personally I do think it's nice for them to have one set of new clothes especially for the first day, but honestly two weeks in and it all looks the same. Must be honest wouldn't re use anything that was stained or noticeably faded

lemorella · 17/08/2020 14:54

No of course it's fine, you are saving the environment by not buying new for the sake of it.

Use a bobble off to refresh it.

Fuzzywuzzyface · 17/08/2020 14:54

If it looks faded and shabby I would personally buy new - I am quite happy to wear clothes from Ebay if they are in excellent condition but wouldn't dream of clothing my child on the 1st day of school looking bubbly and faded.

Julmust · 17/08/2020 14:54

It's fine. The kids won't notice and the teachers will think you are eco friendly. I might buy one smart set for photos and first day if possible

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 17/08/2020 14:57

My DS wears a lot of second hand clothes but I have bought new for school as I didn't want him to stand out on his first day. It depends on the condition to be honest. Some uniforms will only have been worn from September to March last year so would still be in good condition.

NailsNeedDoing · 17/08/2020 14:57

It’s fine! I’d probably get one new jumper just to wear for first school photo day or any other occasions at school that you want them to look smart, but other than that, it’s completely normal for them to be in hand me downs.

Cutesbabasmummy · 17/08/2020 14:57

If it looks like that now what is it going to be like by the end? My DS had trousers that were very thin at the knees held way through the term after xmas. It's TRUE about them getting dirty etc but I've just ordered new sweatshirts in the same size because his old ones look well worn. It is fine if its second hand - just depends on what you want him to look like. It wint affect his education.

ElephantsAlltheWayDown · 17/08/2020 14:58

It's fine -- preferable, even!!

Quackersandcheese3 · 17/08/2020 14:59

It’s fine in my opinion. If it’s looking worn out though I’d maybe buy one or 2 things new. Our school has this wee eco shop where you can buy second hand nursery and school clothing. Such a great wee idea .

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 17/08/2020 15:00

90% of DS2's clothes in general are 2nd hand! He couldn't care less.

When they were babies my family had a big bag of baby clothes that just cycled round the various cousins as we had kids, some being added, some ruined and removed - wasn't until they started regularly destroying clothes that they got their own (and even then, that was mainly just trousers)

De-bobble if you want, but they'll look just as lovely in photos, and aside from photos it really doesn't matter at all.
