Anyone else stunned by how much their reception child has learnt in 3 weeks?!!?

She got her first words home yesterday - and she sat sounding out the letters so she could read the word

I had been going with the theory that at least the first half term was pretty much just play, but there seems to have been a lot of learning through play.

I'm stunned, but very impressed

She wants to count lots too, and is suddenly knowing that two numbers together make twenty something etc.

(I am probably just a very naive first time school mum )

She also brought home a poignant Babette Cole storybook about parents splitting up for us to read and enjoy together
Lots of argumentative little cusses on this thread aren't there

NineUnlikelyTales · 28/09/2007 12:18

I am feeling a bit naughty today.

tortoiseSHELL · 28/09/2007 12:18

Ds1 is VERY smug about never having been on the sad face, but I was alarmed one morning when he produced a piece of paper on which he had drawn a sad face, and written the names of his classmates who were often on it, and proposed showing it at 'Show and Tell'....I unfortunately 'lost' the piece of paper before they left for school.

alittlebitshy · 28/09/2007 12:19

lol marina.
my dd was making up storuies on the jackanory junior site.... she went like so:

yqbnknklajdlkkfj nkljkjkj jkljjkjjll

(approximately anyhow).

She used the space bar announcing "I need more space so i'll press the spacebar"

Marina · 28/09/2007 12:19

Norty NineUnlikelyTales
People come up and tell me about dd too. As in, "So you're dd's mum". Dd is G & T at legging it outside the school gates and screeching

tortoiseSHELL · 28/09/2007 12:20

oh great marina! We've only had books about rockets so far.

wannaBe · 28/09/2007 12:20

my ds has been put in the group of children that have been forming words already. All the others are girls, so am definitely proud mummy that he is the only boy in that group thus far.

He already knew most of his letters/numbers to read before he started but his writing has come on so much and he's so keen to be doing it all the time, and getting much better at sounding out his words.

behaviorwise they have the sun, the rain cloud and the storm cloud, thus far ds hasn't made it on to the rain or storm clouds, but I am threatening to get some for home!

Marina · 28/09/2007 12:20

It made me cry, but she sat there cackling like a witch

tortoiseSHELL · 28/09/2007 12:21

Children are horrid aren't they! I can't watch Finding Nemo because I cry throughout the first half hour, but ds1 and dd laugh their way through it.

slayerette · 28/09/2007 12:22

ds came home one day and told me that if I wanted to say something I should put up my hand. So I know what he learnt that day... He has also learnt a song about a combine harvester. He has had lots of key words and was so excited when he graduated to a reading book! But I felt so sorry for him when we read it and he realised that the only word in it (on every page) was 'Look'. We've abandoned that and gone back to the vastly more exciting key words...

flatmouse · 28/09/2007 12:23

I only know they've done painting, because there is paint in her hair, on her face and hands (fortunately the painting overall has done it's job!).

I know there's been PE because the elastic of the tie is no way underneath the shirt collar.

and i'd love to know where she learnt "OH MY GOD-NESS" (not sure if she meant OMG or goodness me)

sarahhal · 28/09/2007 12:23

DS claims that he has been learning French this week - as a French teacher myself I would be delighted- but I fear that it is a big made up story!!

He doesn't appear to have really "learnt" anything in terms of literacy or numeracy, but I guess all that will come!`(and I will not become a pushy mummy demanding to know when!)

Marina · 28/09/2007 12:23

PMSL slayerette - no wonder we have a number of small people interested only in plasticine and fighting when that's the alternative

princessmel · 28/09/2007 12:24

Ds is like this too. Sounding out letters whenever he sees them.
He's had 2 reading books too!

Marina · 28/09/2007 12:24

Sarahhal, dd is doing a spot of French each week, and informed me that saying bonjour in Malaysia is not polite

NineUnlikelyTales · 28/09/2007 12:25

Aw Slayerette that is so lovely!

Flamesparrow · 28/09/2007 12:26

I don't know if they have a naughty type system... will look on Monday!!

Flamesparrow · 28/09/2007 12:27

DD is also coming out with "Oh man!" - not sure if that is another child, or cartoon network though

tortoiseSHELL · 28/09/2007 12:28

flamesparrow - my kids do that as well - they've got it from a bob the builder film.

princessmel · 28/09/2007 12:30

Oh and at the reception meeting on wed eve dh lokked in a book belonging to the teacher. He wasn't supposed to but saw that ds is down as 'ready to read'. Apparantly some are marked as 'ready', some 'nearly ready' and others 'not ready'. Dh was very pleased. he had a smug emoticon.

tortoiseSHELL · 28/09/2007 12:32

I'm astonished how much your children seem to have done!!!! Dd has honestly done nothing except painting and playing (and of course watching dancing!).

Marina · 28/09/2007 12:32

Well done to all the speedy readers Am hoping you will all post and say they are September babes and already five

slayerette · 28/09/2007 12:38

Well, marina, ds is actually only four-and-a-half and he can read 'Look'

Oh my god-ness I should be posting on a G & T thread!

Kaz33 · 28/09/2007 12:38

Well done - my little man is taking things very slowly, Im just happy that he is going into the class room without screaming

He is he cutest boy in the class (not that I am biased) and is already getting lots of female attention much to his dismay.

princessmel · 28/09/2007 12:39

Ds is 5 in Jan.
