What age would you say this math work is for?

We've had some work come through today that's a different level than what we're used to. What school age would you say these questions would be for?

"There are 12 eggs in each egg tray and I bought 11 trays.
I used 38 eggs this weekend, how many full trays do I have left now?"

"I need to buy enough whiteboards for 273 students and there are 25 in a pack. When the
packs arrive 17 whiteboards are damaged.
How many whiteboards are undamaged?"

"Mum set off at 5:55pm. She arrived at her destination at 7.34pm. Mum had estimated that
the journey would take her 2 hours and 16 minutes.
What is the difference between her estimated and actual travel time?"

What year is your child that these were given to?

thunderthighsohwoe · 07/07/2020 20:22

@Hileni I’m a KS1 and 2 moderator and I’ve never seen a multi step problem like that on the Y2 SATS. Yes, we do teach visually and could be solved using Numicon etc, but children are taught to move beyond the concrete, and by the time they’d be attempting something complex like that we’d want them to be secure enough in the underlying maths to be working in the abstract, or at least pictorially. Hence ideally being able to fluently work with the 11/12 times tables.

I teach year 2. The expectations are to multiply/divide by 2, 5 or 10. No expectation to work with numbers greater than 100. Solving two-step problems is expected for those who are working at Greater Depth, but still with numbers less than 100 and multiplying/dividing by 2/5/10.

Soontobe60 · 07/07/2020 20:26

Y4/5 the problems are quite complex, not just your basic times tables.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 07/07/2020 20:31

It's possible the wrong document got printed and sent home, you could check with school.

Krook · 07/07/2020 20:37

Another teacher here, upper KS2.

@Fenicottero

This is reassuring. There were no visuals, just 10 written down questions all like the ones above. In the end I wrote the sums and let my child work them out bit by bit, so for Q1:

12 x 11= xxxxx
xxxx - 38 = yyyyy
yyyy / 12 = zzzzz
Round zzzz up to the nearest whole to get the answer.

But even then it was tough as they only know their 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 times tables. (They know their 11 times table up to 10 x 11)

Not being pedantic, but they wouldn't need to do the whole sum. They just need to know how many trays have been used, so; 1 tray = 12 eggs, 2trays =24 eggs, 3 trays=36eggs, so they've used 3full trays, 2eggs from the fourth and have 7 full trays left.
Pugdoglife · 07/07/2020 20:40

But yes, I'd expect my year 4 average ability child to do the sum, I'm not sure my year 2 child could do it, even though they are higher ability in maths

Smashtastic · 07/07/2020 20:42

Goodness thesr are advanced even for me after the long day and three gins I've had 😂

LardiLaLardiLi · 07/07/2020 20:44

Year 2 upper group/ year 3

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 07/07/2020 20:46

If its very different from what has normally been set I'd assume its been set in error, it happens occasionally, just contact school and ask.

Pigeonfaces · 07/07/2020 20:47

My year 5 would struggle with these. No chance of doing them without support from me. It’s the 3rd step!

hopefulhalf · 07/07/2020 20:52

Ds could have done these in Y3/4. But he is at a superselective and got a 9 at the end of yr10 (took maths early) so I'd say Y5. Maybe lower end yr6.

ouch321 · 07/07/2020 20:53

Come from her regular school teacher? Or a sub or private tutor.

That Maths I'd set for year 4 or 5.

Too hard for a 6cor 7 year old.

hopefulhalf · 07/07/2020 20:53

Anyway not yr2 !

Fenicottero · 07/07/2020 21:30

Not being pedantic, but they wouldn't need to do the whole sum. They just need to know how many trays have been used, so;
1 tray = 12 eggs, 2trays =24 eggs, 3 trays=36eggs, so they've used 3full trays, 2eggs from the fourth and have 7 full trays left.

Ooh, I wouldn't have even thought to do it like that. That does make it a bit easier.

Fenicottero · 07/07/2020 21:34

It was set online by their regular teacher. The teacher only teaches and sets work for Y2 so I don't think it would be a mix up. The teacher is WFH due to being high risk.

We've been working on fractions, 3 times tables and prisms so this did seem a bit out of context.

Does anyone have an example of how they would work out the time question? I'm curious as to whether I've done it the simplest way.

OP posts:
StraffeHendrik · 07/07/2020 22:11

Actual travel time 21min less than 2h
Expected travel time 16min more than 2h
Difference = 21+16 = 35

StraffeHendrik · 07/07/2020 22:15

I am more confused by the whiteboard question. Mainly because in my book whiteboards are about 2 metres wide, certainly not supplied in packs of 25, and buying 273 of them one per child is a strange mental image....

PurplePansy05 · 07/07/2020 22:24

OP, re time question, I did the actual time:
5 mins (till 6pm)+ 60 mins + 34 mins = 1hr39 mins

vs

2hr16 mins estimated

The difference is 21 mins to 2 hrs + 16 mins = 37 mins

It was very quick to calculate this way.

Gunpowder · 07/07/2020 22:25

It’s definitely harder than the maths my year 2 has been doing on zoom with her teacher/class.

Bringmewineandcake · 07/07/2020 22:35

My Y2 couldn't do these. I think it must have been set in error.

VashtaNerada · 07/07/2020 22:42

It completely depends on context. How much support from an adult, whether pictures or manipulatives are involved, if it’s timed, if it’s broken down into several stages. With appropriate support a bright Y2 could do this. If it was timed and independent it could be on the 11+.
