Would you be worried about this in year 3 (and what would you do or hope the school would do?)

If, after you raising concerns about your year 3 child’s literacy, they were sent home this spelling list, what would you be thinking?

Until now, the school has repeatedly told me that he’s ‘doing fine’ and that I was ‘anxious’.

This is the spellings my year 3 is doing.

drownininplaymobil · 22/06/2020 15:51

I would be requesting a meeting with the senco.

AuntieAl · 22/06/2020 15:52

I would ask to speak to your child's teacher and see if they are concerned. The spelling examples you have given would suggest they are. I would hope they have some literacy intervention planned for your child.
In the mean time read with your child as much as you can, get them to look at the book with you and get them to sound out some words, if they can. If they are struggling then look at some phonics programmes on YouTube to go over the basic sounds - something like jolly phonics, or there are many others that you may prefer.

Duckfinger · 22/06/2020 15:56

If nobody had ever mentioned him struggling before and I thought those were too easy I might wonder if someone had attached the wrong file to what was sent home.

If I already had my concerns or school had expressed them I would be asking for a meeting/phonecall with teacher.

For reference : Those are part of the spelling list I send for my SEND yr 2 group.

Thanks. I’ve been requesting meetings and speaking to the class teachers since year 1.

My P3 child does spelling like this (or a little harder, not by much) - he is dyslexic. Quite amazed by @oceany's list, he is sooooo far off that! I knew he was "behind" but not the extent of it. What matters to me is that he's improving though.

BrokenBrit · 22/06/2020 15:59

Can your DC spell those words when you practice them? Is it that school are setting too easy work? Have they been sent in error? Or is it that your child is working at this level?

You have legitimate concerns and school are dismissing you. I would be arranging a call with the teacher and SENCO.

This is typical spelling for year 3.

I’m being a bit ingenuous with you all I suppose - I do know what the expectations are for year 3. DD is very dyslexic and has made it through primary school unsupported. I have had concerns about DS since reception but he didn’t have the same sorts of difficulties as his sister and maybe I didn’t push hard enough with school earlier on. Honestly, I have expressed my concern at every parents’ evening and have had meetings with the senco. This list was sent today after I emailed again this morning saying that my concerns had grown over the school closure period (he’s in school now as I’m a key worker).
He can actually spell these words and the other 20 on the page (first HfW I think) but doesn’t always spell them correctly in free writing. I am worried that this is the ‘intervention’ they’re offering (they will test the five words daily) and that they’ll consider it enough.
I’m feeling really upset and angry now. Don’t quite know what to do with myself.
I’ll unload the dishwasher...

Disingenuous, rather!

My year 3 son would probably have similar spellings. I've been raising my concerns for years and get told he's fine.
Since he's been home from school I've raised concerns twice now as the work is too difficult for him. I've mentioned dyslexia.
I've been told to keep practicing reading every day.
I don't know what I want school to be doing as I font know what the options are but feel they haven't done enough.
Any advice from people on what schools can do in these circumstances would be great.

This could be the 'direct/precision teaching' intervention they are doing. I run it with several children, we work on the five words then test how many the child can spell (or in some cases read) in 1 minute. When they reach the aim rate of x amount correct and less than y amount incorrect on 3 consecutive days 3 out of the 5 words are changed and we continue the same way. It is a very effective intervention but is definitely only part of the provision.
mamapants · 22/06/2020 16:29

Sorry thinking about it my sons are probably nearer the easier half of the list posted. But his reading is very basic and he guesses a lot.

parrotonmyshoulder · 22/06/2020 16:32

It is precision teaching. It is ALL that was ever offered for DD. After the easy words, it made no difference - you can’t learn each word you need to spell separately like that.
I’m sure your school offers more, Duckfinger. What else would you be providing?

My son does a program called Nessy which has helped a lot. It is computer based though, so his handwriting is still a jumble.

RedskyAtnight · 22/06/2020 18:22

I seem to remember that my DC spent the tail end of Year 3 going through all the "standard" spellings they were meant to know by this point. We got the whole list at once, but there was a lot of very simple words on it.

So I would be wondering if everyone in the class had got the same list ...

Duckfinger · 22/06/2020 20:41

Ok so if a child was still on this level in year three we would probably do a "Read Write Inc" intervention preferably with a small group.
We would also provide word/sound mats to support independent writing and where possible have a TA at the table to guide.
