DTDs have to write wordlists each week focusing on a different sound(s).

This week we have words containing "ou" with th sound 'u'. We are really struggling...any other suggestions

Should
Could
Would
Rough

Enough.

And what about chough - as in the bird?

Or slough - as in what you do to dry skin?

SlightlyMadSweden · 24/09/2007 21:01

Singresgirl....

whats a "schwa"....doesn't sound anything like an 'u' to me...but elasticbands words do say 'u' to me...although agree there could be regional variations in punctuation.

Should
Could
Would
Rough
Tough
Enough
Loughborough
marvalous
wonderous
ambitious
ambidextrous
famous
Chough (I trust you given I have never heard of it)

All but Rough, Tough, Enough, Loughborough anf not Slough if as in the place. Dunno about the weirdy one.

newlifenewname · 24/09/2007 21:22

Add delicious, nutritious, superfluous

SlightlyMadSweden · 24/09/2007 21:26

It was Slough as in shead skin ALA WWB. TBH I will probably leave that off as they are only 6 and I won't tell them the 'answers' but give them clues, so they need to know it anyway.

Forgive me for being dim, but what is wrong with

All but Rough, (Ruff)
Tough, (tuff)
Enough, (enuff)
Loughborough (Luffboro)

newlifenewname · 24/09/2007 21:29

the other are all a different sound. more of an oo (not oooooooooo) or uh. iyswim.

This is blardy confusing, I thought Slough might be slough!

RustyBear · 24/09/2007 21:33

It's marvellous.
Sorry to be pedantic, but it is a spelling thread

wheresthehamster · 24/09/2007 21:35

delicious
gorgeous

newlifenewname · 24/09/2007 21:36

mysterious
delirious
nefarious

Hulababy · 24/09/2007 21:36

newlifenewname - could, should, etc all have "u" sound in middle up where I am. I can't even say them with an "oo" sound - keep trying, DH thinks I have gone mad!

SlightlyMadSweden · 24/09/2007 21:36

This is doing my head in, think of my poor 6yos .

I don't remember doing all of these phenomes at school....tiss bloody hard.

A couple of weeks ago they we doing oo (as in scoop. One of the examples was 'school' I was a bit , so I don't think they are perfect.

If it helps they are doing the 'u' sound in general this week and the other phenomes they are using are

'oo' (eg look - we have loads of examples)
'u' (as in stuck - don't need to do this one)

To me rough etc. definately have an 'u' sound so it must be 'ou' rather than the other two .

OP posts:
newlifenewname · 24/09/2007 21:37

I think same for me to if you mean an u rather than an u

When I say oo it is in the short sense not oooooooooo

SlightlyMadSweden · 24/09/2007 21:38

So you think it is could and should which are 'wrong'?

They definately aren't wrong as could is the example given and should and would are on the spellings sheet.

[desperate for a headspinning emoticon]

newlifenewname · 24/09/2007 21:39

Unless you are in Yorkshire or summit and this is an exercise in dialect then rough is NOT the same I assure you

SlightlyMadSweden · 24/09/2007 21:39

It needs to be the 'uh' sound as in 'bus' not 'fuse'

OP posts:
wheresthehamster · 24/09/2007 21:39

When you say them is is the short 'o' sound.
Sound wrong to me (SE area)

newlifenewname · 24/09/2007 21:39

No is Rough and Tough not could and should!

SlightlyMadSweden · 24/09/2007 21:39

I am in the midlands

OP posts:
Spidermama · 24/09/2007 21:40

How come you're, or rather we're, doing their homework for them?

newlifenewname · 24/09/2007 21:40

Just tell the teacher this is a no brainer assignment because dialect gets in the way

wheresthehamster · 24/09/2007 21:40

agree with newlife

Hulababy · 24/09/2007 21:41

newlifenewname - I am in Yorkshire, hence confusion.

Same as the Mn thread about put and but not rhyming! I was very confused and had to ask a Southern friend to say the words to me - and yes, their version didn't rhyme, whereas my versions do!

SlightlyMadSweden · 24/09/2007 21:41

Whats a short 'o'.

I pronounce them

cud
shud
wud
ruff
enuff

I personally don't esee/hear any diffence in how the 'ou' sound sounds...
