Maths tutor for DS9, how many sessions?

Hi I’m looking at maths tutors for my son, age 9, mainly to help him catch up and revise key topics before he goes back to school. He’s quite capable at maths but loses concentration easily and then thinks he can’t do it and either switches off or gets frustrated. I’m a LP and working FT, and I can’t spend as much time with him as I’d like.

I’m new to the whole tutor thing, so I was wondering how many sessions a week we should be looking at. Is 1 hr a week enough to make a difference? Is 2 hrs too much? I don’t want to overload him obvs. I’m looking for someone with specific primary experience but is there anything else that’s important, skills wise? It will all be done online so I’m trying to find someone who’s done lots of this type of teaching, rather than just adapting to the current situation.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, as a really experienced primary teacher and tutor, I would say one hour a week should be fine- although I would split this into two half hour sessions with the tutor. I have been Zoom tutoring since lockdown and it's so much harder for the kids online.
I would also ask the tutor to give him some homework.
Hope that helps

I agree with the poster above, 1 hour a week should be fine plus a bit of homework to reinforce what has been taught.

I would go against the grain a little and say 2 hours a day for a week is better than 10 x 1 hour sessions. A bit like if you were having a year of driving lessons, a week's intensive course might be the push you need to pass the driving test.

I’d wait until he’s finished a term once schools are running normally and you have projected grades and a parent/teacher meeting.

There is no point paying for a tutor for him then to go to school, find out he is way ahead and then be bored in class.

1 hour a week plus homework. Don't worry about being ahead in class. Those that worry about your child being bored as they are 'ahead' are actually just worried that their own child will be behind your child.
