Pre Covid class sizes

Can I ask people how big their kid's class sizes are before the virus? I didn't realise my Grand daughter's class normally has 33 childrenšŸ¤” with a teacher and a teaching assistant. Is this the norm for a state (academy run) school primary?

I have 27 in my year 4 class but going to 30 in September.

CarlottaValdez · 17/06/2020 22:02

My DS’ reception class is 31 with one teacher and 3 TAs (two of them are 1:1 for children with some SEN).

RAINSh0wers · 17/06/2020 22:04

My DD’s year 1 class has 30 children with 1 teacher and a TA who only does mornings.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 17/06/2020 22:23

Quite normal, especially in city locations.

Smellbellina · 17/06/2020 22:25

30, TA’s for occasional sessions

TenThousandSpoons · 17/06/2020 22:41

32 is the normal limit for junior age classes (KS2) but my dd’s class also had 33 due to exceptional circumstances. My ds only had 27 though as kids left and nobody new joined. 30 is the usual limit in KS1.

pitterpatterrain · 17/06/2020 22:43

YR1 academy SW London, think it was either 21 or 22

Stuckforthefourthtime · 17/06/2020 22:49

Quite normal. My dc3 has been back at school in year 1 with a class of fifteen, I had really mixed feelings about him going back, but he's absolutely blossomed in the smaller setting.
Usually there are 30 kids with many who don't speak English at home, one child who is exceptionally bright, a couple with additional needs and tricky behaviours (but no 1-1 support and only the teacher plus 50% of a shared TA for the whole class). I think there is little time left for kids like DS3, who's easygoing and bang in the middle for most things, nor is there enough time for kids like my DS2 with ASD who I suspect gets a lot more attention than DS3 would, but still not enough or in the right way.

I'd love it if smaller class sizes were an outcome of covid that could stay, but I'm guessing it's more bloody austerity to pay for lockdown...

Reception class has 30, year 4 class has 33 both with a teacher and a TA.

Norestformrz · 18/06/2020 06:24

I had 31 in my Y1 class last year no teaching assistant.

cliffdiver · 18/06/2020 06:28

DD1 (Y3) 30 children. 1 full time TA, 1 full time INA.

DD2 (Y1) 31 children. 1 full time TA, 1 full time INA.

Me (Y1) 28 children. 1 TA shared with Y2.

tiredanddangerous · 18/06/2020 06:33

Dd (y5) has 30 in her class. 1 teacher and a TA a couple of mornings a week.

Chanel05 · 18/06/2020 07:28

I have 34, and no TA, in a town not a city.

MoltoAgitato · 18/06/2020 07:30

My DC are both in KS1 mixed year group classes with between 22 and 24 in their class.

Squeekybummum · 18/06/2020 07:34

27 for my year 5 (was 32 at one stage)
16 for my year 2. As you can imagine all the year 2 children were breezing through the year as they were able to have so much more attention.

GoingtotheWinchester · 18/06/2020 07:35

32, just me as the class teacher. No TA. It’s crazy.

Frustratedsenmummy · 18/06/2020 07:39

My DDs reception class has 30 kids, 1 teacher, 1 TA and her one to one.

Russell19 · 18/06/2020 07:44

Eyfs and KS1 have a 30 child limit (unless there are appeals) but KS2 does not have a set legal limit. 33 or even 34 is normal.

Grasspigeons · 18/06/2020 08:01

My child was in 35 in year 3 which was 2 years ago. He now goes to a SEN school. His sibling was in 37 for year 4/5 and in the afternoons it went to 41.

BertieBob · 18/06/2020 08:18

I'm a secondary teacher. I regularly have classes of 37 now. They did look to reduce the number of teachers (more budget cuts) and this number was set to rise slightly. This obviously won't happen now due to Covid. It's going to be a delight teaching small classes for a while. Albeit in a weird social distance way.

BlackCat91 · 18/06/2020 09:27

Thanks for the replies. I see it is the norm and not just our school. Not good though ā˜¹ļø.

30 is the norm for state schools where I am (southeast). 17-20 the norm for private schools.

starfish4 · 18/06/2020 10:16

Had a very low intake for reception last year so 21, 25 and 25 in each. The rest of the school 30-33. When DD was there she was in a class of 34.

Murmurur · 18/06/2020 10:31

30 for infants, 32 at juniors, 30 in KS3.

Juniors used to be 33 but they often had a general cover TA. Now there are practically none of those, but my child's year has enough children with EHCPs that there is usually a TA in class for them.
