Anyone's child using iPad & Apple Pencil instead of printing work?

My printer is pants & I have blurry printouts of worksheets all over the house now.

2 primary dc & I am considering purchasing a new iPad with Apple Pencil for most of the work to be done there & the other dc can use the ancient iPad to read from & write out answers. Would like things to be a little easier come September.

Does anyone think this will help or have a better idea?

I recently bought an iPad and pencil as I do some private maths tuition and use it as a whiteboard when teaching.

I can write on documents and fill out gaps in worksheets, but it’s difficult as an adult to get the precision so I’m not sure how a child would find it.

All we've used it for is wordsearches where you're using the pencil to highlight. The novelty and colour is the only advantage.
This is with a 9 year old and although he's previously used the pencil to 'draw' and scribble with.
I use it to fill forms in and find it messy, I honestly can't see most kids being able to use it to fill out worksheets.

Interesting - thank you. I thought it might help things be more organised for the older one & he could then use it for big school.

I also hoped the 6 yo could use it for her worksheets which are bigger spaces for writing. Perhaps it's back to the drawing board

Yes we have been doing so. We did it by necessity until we eventually gave in and bought a printer. So the other way round to you.

All the kids in my school (secondary) have an iPad and most have apple pencils.
My son completes the vast majority of his work with his and it’s great. Not much much difference between his pen writing on paper and iPad writing.
If you export the worksheets into GoodNotes, you can enlarge the writing but it comes out the correct size on the page - a bit like a magnifying glass.

That’s what we’ve been doing too, and it works well.

We use Goodnotes, which you have to pay for but as a family license it can go on multiple devices. This seems to work much better for school work than the general mark-up function.

It also means that simple things, like links to videos of the text being read out, work all on the one device. And if you are submitting work you don’t have to scan it or take a picture, you just have a file ready to share.
Hopefully I’ve attached a screenshot of some of my DD’s work so you can see how it comes out.

Brilliant thanks - we went ahead & ordered one so good to know. Will get the app & hope it spurs the boy on to do some transfer tests over summer 😁

Oh, one other thing. If you do get GoodNotes, you can keep his work super organised in categories/subjects and workbooks. It’s a really great app.

Thanks - will do. Should be good for the price! Grin

My daughter does a lot of work on her iPad anyway as she has dyspraxia - but she manages to write with the Apple Pencil fine (we got a silicone sleeve to make it easier to hold - and keep the charging cap from being lost) - if you get Goodnotes you can download handwriting paper pdfs and use them as templates as well - we use one with the lower case area highlighted which helps her with letter sizing.

For worksheets - big mention to the Snaptype Pro app - where you can either import a pdf, or photograph a worksheet and type directly onto it to complete. It is a godsend. My very dippy 7 year old manages to use it just fine.

Oh yeah - get a screen protector fitted - I like the matte ones just because I hate the feeling of writing on glass, but the kids use glass ones on theirs - just means there's no risk of the screen getting damaged.

I use goodnotes - if you have a Mac computer as well you can get the Mac version free as well if you buy the iPad version and open all your notes on the computer too.

buckeejit · 19/06/2020 10:51

Thanks - will order a screen protector now. Do you have one of the thicker tempered glass ones or just a thin film one?

Need a cover too so something else to research. Think we will have to set some rules for us of this new toy so dc aren't carrying it everywhere!

I'd recommend otterbox covers.

Thanks for all the advice - Ipad has arrived and goodnotes is indeed fab - so much easier for younger dc as she has the most sheets of paper to print for the least writing.

I think it will acutally help me to better organise the many notes I have on my phone too!
