****Quick Poll**** How many children in your child's Year 1 Class?

DD has 29 in her class this year.
I am unhappy that 6 further children have joined since last term, DH says I'm unreasonable.
How many in your child's class. Is 29 an average number?

My DS just started YR1 in September. There are two classes per year, and this year group both classes are full. They have 30 pupils in each class, as there was in the reception class. I think the maximun is 30 in a class. I would prefer smaller classes too, but I would need to go private for that and that isn't possible!

corblimeycharlie · 24/09/2007 13:07

Not always the case around here in Wales. The other school DD could have gone to has only 21 in the class and I'm beginning to wonder if I have made the wrong decision?

Oh the bloody responsibility of parenting is just too much sometimes!!

here there are two groups of 30. one has 18 reception age children sept-dec b-days and 12 younger yr ones and the other has twenty or so year ones and some yr 2s to make up the 30.

FabulousKbear · 24/09/2007 21:11

30 here. It's the norm.

fruitful · 24/09/2007 21:51

18 each in 2 classes. They had a bit of last minute struggle to find the money for an extra teacher so they didn't have to put 1/3 of them in with the yr 2 class.

Hulababy · 24/09/2007 21:59

15 in DD's prep school.

However local catchment school were having 70 children over 2 classes!

cazzybabs · 24/09/2007 22:05

In England 30 is the max in the state sector. I think less than 30 and schools struggle for funding and therefore resources.

I teach in a private school and have 18 and a full time TA

kid · 27/09/2007 21:45

30 in DS's Y1 class. They have the teacher and 2 full-time TA's working in there too.

ChasingSquirrels · 27/09/2007 21:53

ds is in reception, but yr 1 & yr 2 are a single class - there are 22 of them.

fortyplus · 27/09/2007 21:54

Can be up to 30 with one teacher. Beyond that the school gets extra funding to hire another one.

PeachesMcLean · 27/09/2007 21:59

I think 30 is the max in Wales too. DS has just got into a school as the 30th child and I was told it was the last place. There are schools with smaller class sizes but IME it's because they're the less popular schools, for whatever reason (some a little odder than others).

Eliza2 · 28/09/2007 08:41

Nine! And about 10 in the year above. Both years are in the same classroom.--so 19 altogether Although it sounds lovely, one little girl has quite serious social and emotional problems, and her behaviour, and that of another couple of disruptive children, really is more marked when there are fewer sensible, solid citizens to dilute it.

Soph73 · 28/09/2007 09:44

There are 26 in DS class but they do have a full-time TA.

marthamoo · 28/09/2007 09:46

Two classes of 30.

twofishes · 28/09/2007 21:47

two classes of 17 ..but they mix with Yr 2 for Maths & English which adds another 17 onto that then...

30
consider yourself (dd) to have been lucky to have less than that for a short time!

lljkk · 29/09/2007 09:36

That's the averge size for all classes at DD school. About a quarter of the classes are mixed yr groups. DS1 had 24 falling to 22 in y1 2 yrs ago. Perhaps the benefits of attending an school with an only average reputation? I know someone who sneers at the idea of sending her precious DC to our primary.

DaisyMOO · 29/09/2007 09:48

I haven't got a clue! Does that make me a bad parents? Seriously though, how do you find out how many there are? I'd be more concerned by the quality of the teaching and the overall feel of the school than class sizes tbh.

suwoo · 29/09/2007 09:56

23 with one teacher, one full time TA and another TA who supports a girl with health concerns.

jennifersofia · 29/09/2007 11:01

30, 1 full time TA. Norm for London.
(quick hijack (sorry!) Cazzybabs, do you find it much easier teaching in a private school? I confess to be a bit jealous)

cazzybabs · 29/09/2007 11:10

I have 18 in a class, full time classroom assistant which is fab. But the worst thing about private schools is the pushy parents. They pay and so demand things. There is also lots of after school things to go to!

jennifersofia · 29/09/2007 11:18

Thanks, maybe I will consider it when I am job searching next- though the parents thing does scare me!
