Relocation help

Hi

We are relocating probably this summer or certainly by the beginning of next year. We have a child in reception currently and one due to start in sept 2021. There are no spaces in year 1 for the reception child for this September and probably not a year 2 place the year after as the intakes are so low. The LA aren't taking calls at the moment (have emailed). Private isn't an option. Surely this happens to a lot of families, what do we do?! Home schooling would be tricky as there are four children in our household and both of us work. Thanks

would you mind saying what area you are in, OP? The appeals process etc can differ from area to area

ok, there is a thread from a while ago that I have just found, with a mother in a similar situation to you. It is a few years old but the advice that she was given still applies x

I moved to Lincolnshire last summer. We applied for school places at three if the four nearest schools (we discounted the Catholic one) received one place and was rejected for one child. The council then applied for every school in the area (within a five mile radius) on our behalf. Meanwhile we appealed for eldest daughter at the school the youngest had been allocated. She was offered a space at a school two miles away with schoil transport (we the won our appeal, but that was Junior School).

Basically, the Council has to find you a place, just not necessarily in school of your choice.

Thanks very much, very helpful both. Where are you in Lincolnshire? Also did you retain your place in your current school until you got a place at the new school? Got to all tie in with property transaction too!

We are in Grantham. We moved from abroad (military) and their old school closed so they had no school place whatsoever. (It was short notice as well, we were supposed to move elsewhere, tbut the Army likes keeping people on their own toes).

The main issue is that normally, the council does not have to provide you with places in the same school. They may offer transport if it's sperate schools, but it was just a taxi for the child.

OP, if you wouldn't mind narrowing down where you are moving to, i can post emails of schools contact details. You can email to enquire whether they have any places for both of your dc? No worries If you would rather not x

Feel free (though the only one of those schools I know is Harlaxton, we are other side of town)
