Should I say something to his teacher - or will he think I've ^totally^ lost the plot??

DS1 (7) has just started yr2 at his infant school. Ever since he started there in reception he's been called by the "short" version of his name (Taf/Taffy isntead of Tafara) - in the last 8 or 9 months that has become his (current) preferred name (I'm sure he'll probably change his mind in a few years and want his full name again).

All of his work, and comments in his reading record book etc have had "Taffy" and that is what the teachers call him. He was quite grumpy end of last week when he came home from school as his new teacher had written his full name on the comment in his reading book and "I like to be called Taffy" (his words). It's the same record book he's had since reception so all the other pages have that.

I asked him what his new teacher (who he thinks is "cool" btw especially as he's a man - yes one of those rarities of a male primary school teacher) called him and he broke into a smile and said "Taffy". He's come home again today grumpy as he did reading and again Tafara has been written in the book.

Now I know that it really doesn't matter but it's bugging DS1.....would the teacher think I'm mad if I mentioned it???

Maybe the teacher is worried that you wouldn't approve of the shortening. Perhaps just mention in passng that your ds really likes to be known that way and that you like it as that's what makes him happy.

WotsZePoint · 19/09/2007 22:47

I would mention it. Or as ds1 is in year2 see if he could mention it.

"Can you call me xx like everyone else please""?

elesbells · 19/09/2007 22:47

i dont think the teacher would mind.

he obviously knows what he wants to be called so i dont see a problem.

i know what you mean though, it will feel strange going in and saying 'excuse me, do you mind not calling my son by his real name'

yelnats · 19/09/2007 22:49

The teacher probably thinks you would prefer him to be called by his full name and doesnt want to offend.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 19/09/2007 22:50

Aparrently he calls him Taffy in lessons - but in his reading record book is writing the full name (don't know about his other books as they're all at school)...

It's a really small school and all of the teachers tend to know all of the pupils in other classes.....not to mention the fact that I have a very close friend that works as a Teaching Assistant in one of the yr1 classes there....and I didn't know if I was being totally mad to mention it to him when I pick DS1 up after school tomorrow .

thing is though right from his first term in Reception the school were told that we called him "Taffy" and that we were quite happy for the school to use that......anyhow - like I said in my OP not really a huge deal shall mention it to the (rather gorgeous ) teacher this afternoon (if anything to save the 7yr strops that result from it )

I have always written full names in books and documents going home to parents, incase the parents don't like the shortened name. In reports, etc. and on the fronts of school books (anything more official, etc) I have used full names unless it is written on my info about the children (used to get this at start of year plus info in register) that I was to use another name. I would use the child's preferred name in class though.

If you want the shortened name used, just ask the school teacher and see what they say.

bev1e · 20/09/2007 10:08

Why not pop a line in his reading record book?

TellusMater · 20/09/2007 10:12

We were always told to use the proper name on reports etc, so he is probably just doing htat. I'd have a chat with him.

At the dcs school you have to give them details of full names for getting funding etc, but then they do ask you to state what name you want your child to be called at school and then that is used for everything.
